Chapter 33 - The Silent Siege

Mark moved before Julian could take another step. With the speed of a man protecting his life's blood, Mark shoved Julian backward, his fist cocked.
Instantly, three red laser dots converged on Mark’s chest. The guards behind Julian raised their suppressed rifles, the metallic clatter of bolts sliding into place echoing off the grand foyer’s vaulted ceiling.
"Mark, no!" I screamed, lunging forward and grabbing his arm, pulling him back.
"Patience, gentlemen," Julian murmured, casually brushing off the lapel of his overcoat where Mark’s hand had grazed it. "Mr. Evans is merely reacting with common animal instinct. But let us be clear: Black Ridge is now in full isolation. We have jammed all cellular networks within a twenty-mile radius. The satellite uplinks you installed last month have been severed at the base station in the valley."
"You can't hold us hostage," I said through gritted teeth, feeling the cold sweat running down my spine. "The sheriff’s department knows we have around-the-clock protection. When our morning check-in fails, they will send state police."
"The sheriff’s department believes you and your family have departed on a private charter to the Caribbean," Julian said smoothly, reaching into his pocket and retrieving a thin tablet. He tapped the screen and held it out toward me.
On the screen was an official flight manifest from Newark International Airport. Listed under passenger names were: *Sarah Evans, Mark Evans, Clara Evans, Arthur Montgomery.* The departure time was stamped three hours ago.
"You see, Sarah, to the world, you are already gone," Julian whispered. "If this estate suffers a catastrophic electrical fire before sunrise, the recovery of charred remains will simply be classified as local squatters or tragic vagrants. The legal identity of the Montgomery family will have officially vanished over the Atlantic."
My stomach dropped into a bottomless void. This was not Eleanor’s frantic, spiteful games. This was state-level erasure. The Vienna Accord had resources that operated beyond the law, beyond borders, beyond morality.

"What do you want?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "Just tell me what you want to let us walk out of here with Clara."
"I want the true key to the Black Ridge cistern," Julian said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Arthur knows where it is. He survived the 1968 purge because he swallowed the truth. Bring him to me, or I will have my men dismantle this house board by board—starting with the nursery floor."
