Chapter 50 - The Echo from the Abyss

The static on the cockpit radio crackled violently, phasing through scrambled military frequencies before locking onto a private, unmonitored digital channel.
Mark fought the vibrating controls, his knuckles white as he leveled the jet at twenty thousand feet, steering blind through the mountain turbulence. "Sarah! Look out the right window! Now!"
I pulled myself up from the cabin floor, clutching Clara against my chest, and peered through the oval window.
Slicing through the cloud deck above us were two swept-wing, unmarked stealth interceptors, their matte-black fuselages carrying no national insignia, no Council crest, and no transponder lights. They were flying in tight tactical escort, their weapon bays slightly open, tracking our every maneuver.
Then, over the cockpit speaker, a voice broke through the radio.
It was not Julian. It was not Arch-Chancellor Richter.
It was a voice that chilled my blood down to absolute zero—a voice that was smooth, mocking, and horribly familiar.
*"Did you really think it was that simple, my sweet, naive little daughter?"*
My breath hitched in my throat. My knees gave out, and I collapsed onto the cabin floor.
"Eleanor..." I choked out, staring at the radio transmitter in sheer disbelief. "You... you were sentenced. You were locked beneath the lake!"
A cold, theatrical laugh echoed through the cockpit, filled with the same cruel venom that had humiliated me on Christmas Day, but magnified by an unfathomable, terrifying authority.
*"The High Chamber of Vienna? Richter? Julian? They were merely the actors on the stage, Sarah. Did you honestly believe your grandfather was the only one who understood the 1968 Covenant? Did you think the woman who raised you was foolish enough to let herself be tried by a council she secretly owns?"*
The radio hissed with the sound of a champagne cork popping on the other end of the line.
*"You unlocked the Black Ledger for me, Sarah. You brought the biometric key to the vault. Clara’s little hand did what I could never do on my own. And now, the true sovereign council has mobilized."*
Mark grabbed the radio microphone, his voice thundering with primal rage: *"If you touch a hair on Sarah or Clara’s head, Eleanor, I will hunt you to the ends of the earth!"*
*"Save your breath, commoner,"* Eleanor’s voice purred coldly through the speaker. *"Look out your cockpit window. Those interceptors aren't here to shoot you down. They are escorting you to your new home. Welcome to Project Tartarus, Sarah. Give my granddaughter a kiss for me... because you will never hold her again."*
Outside the cockpit glass, the two black interceptors banked sharply, releasing a blinding cloud of electromagnetic chaff that killed the jet’s avionics instantly.

The cockpit screens went pitch-black. The jet’s engines cut out completely.
And as the aircraft began its silent, terrifying glide down into the mist of an uncharted alpine valley, the radio clicked off, leaving only the sound of Clara's frightened cry echoing into the dark.
