Chapter 40 - The Herald at Dawn

Mark didn't flinch. He didn't step back. His eyes were locked on Julian’s with a cold, terrifying calm that stopped the enforcer in his tracks.
"You made a mistake, Julian," Mark said, his voice steady as iron.
"Did I?" Julian sneered, raising the gun higher. "You are cornered in a nursery with an infant, completely surrounded by twenty trained operatives."
"You assumed Henry Montgomery was running from the Directorate," Mark said softly, his thumb tracing the spine of the ancient Bible. "You assumed this book contained the cipher to the cistern vault."
Julian’s brow furrowed, a flicker of doubt finally cracking his polished aristocratic facade. "What are you talking about?"
"Arthur told us the cipher was magnetic," Mark continued, his voice echoing through the quiet nursery. "He was right. But it isn't an entry code. It’s a dead-man’s frequency."
Mark flicked the brass clasp of the Bible open.
Instantly, from the base of the spine, a small, blinking red LED light illuminated. A high-pitched, harmonic electronic tone began to pulse from within the leather binding—transmitting a continuous, high-frequency signal into the mountain sky.
Across the room, the radio on Julian’s belt erupted into frantic, screaming static.
*"Lord Julian! Look at the valley! Look at the valley!"* the voice of Julian’s tactical commander shrieked over the comms. *"We have incoming! Multiple air contacts approaching at low altitude! They aren't local police!"*
Julian’s face went dead white. He stepped toward the nursery window, ripping back the sheer curtains.
Down below, cutting through the swirling blizzard at incredible speed, three massive, unmarked black helicopters thundered up the gorge, their searchlights illuminating the snow-covered pine trees in blinding, violent white arcs.
On the side of the lead helicopter, painted in stark white stencil, was the insignia not of the American government, nor of the local authorities—but the double-headed imperial eagle of the Senior Council of Vienna.
The radio crackled again, a cold, commanding German voice overriding Julian’s secure frequency:
*"Julian Vance Montgomery. You have violated Section 4 of the 1968 Treaty by operating without Council authorization. Stand down immediately and surrender the child to the High Custodian, or you will be neutralized alongside the estate."*
Julian dropped his pistol to his side, his hands trembling violently as he turned back to look at Mark, then at me, then at Clara.
"Who..." Julian whispered, his voice cracking in sheer disbelief. "Who triggered the Council?"
From the nursery doorway behind me, the sound of slow, heavy footsteps made us all turn.
Standing in the hallway was not Arthur, nor Eleanor.
May you like
It was a man in an impeccably tailored black trench coat, carrying a silver-tipped walking stick, his silver hair slicked back against the rain. He stepped into the light of the nursery, looking down at Clara with ancient, calculating eyes.
"Welcome home, Sarah," the man said softly. "Your grandfather told me you would survive."
