Chapter 53 - The Frozen Shallows

The water hit like a wall of shattered ice. The cold punched into my chest, stealing every breath in an instant of pure shock. Lake Tahoe’s deep winter water was barely above freezing, and the kinetic force of the plunge drove us ten feet beneath the surface before buoyancy halted our dive.

I kicked hard toward the faint shimmer of starlight filtering through the surface. Charles was thrashing like a drowned rat, sinking beneath his heavy wool coat. I grabbed his collar with one hand and dragged him upward, keeping the briefcase locked against my hip with the other.

We broke the surface into the raw, stinging night air, both of us gasping for oxygen.

Charles coughed violently, vomiting lake water and bile into the dark foam. "I... I can't breathe... Ethan..."

"Keep your head up," I growled, spitting water as I swam backward with steady, deliberate scissor kicks.

A hundred yards to our east lay the rocky shoreline of Rubicon Point—a jagged shelf of massive granite boulders fringed by towering sugar pines. The parachute had collapsed into the water behind us, sinking into the dark depths like a ghost ship. The crimson light on the briefcase had ceased its frenetic chime; submerged in the freezing lake, the casing had dropped into a low-power standby mode, but the amber warning icon remained lit. The data core was intact.

Dragging Charles through the biting surf drained the last ounces of my strength. When my boots finally struck the submerged gravel of the shallows, I hauled him forward and threw him face-first onto the icy granite shelf. He collapsed into the slush, shivering violently, his expensive veneer stripped away to reveal a broken, shivering old man shivering in terror.

I dropped to one knee, water running in rivulets from my tactical rig. My chest burned from the freezing plunge, but the combat adrenaline surged like liquid fire through my veins.

I popped the seals on my tactical radio earpiece, shaking off the moisture before keying the Vanguard line.

"Ghost-One to Control," I rasped, my throat raw. "Target secured. We are ashore on the south side of Rubicon Point. Confirm perimeter status."

A burst of static crackled through the bone-conduction headset, followed by Sarah’s tense, urgent voice.

"Ethan! Oh thank God—radar showed the chopper deploying an emergency release over the bay. We thought..." She caught her breath, professional discipline snapping back into place. "Listen to me carefully. That bird didn't retreat toward Reno. It circled back over the ridge. They've deployed a four-man hit team to sweep the shoreline. They aren't looking to rescue Charles, Ethan. They're coming to incinerate the evidence."
