Chapter 41 - The Midnight Broadcast

"What do you mean, he's not alone?" I demanded, stepping into the cramped cockpit beside him. "The coordinates linked directly to Vance's personal defense firm."

Marcus turned the tactical monitor toward me.

On the screen, a real-time satellite reconnaissance image showed the northern shore of Lake Tahoe. A private fleet of four armored yachts had dropped anchor outside the jurisdiction of the local sheriff, surrounded by private security gunboats.

A high-frequency transmission array was broadcasting on open maritime channels.

"Charles didn't just sell technology," Marcus whispered, his eyes dark with an emotion I had never seen in him: genuine dread. "Charles sold the digital decryption keys to the entire western naval defense grid. The auction ends at midnight tonight. Vance isn't trying to cover his tracks to stay hidden. He's preparing to leave the country. He has a private transport submarine en route to intercept him via the Sacramento River delta."

"And the four million dollars?" Chloe asked suddenly from the floor, her voice trembling. "The money Dad gave me?"

Marcus turned his head slowly, looking down at his younger sister with cold, unyielding pity.

"That wasn't money, Chloe," Marcus said. "That was the initial deposit paid by the buyers to verify the system worked. You didn't just inherit a villa. You signed an international declaration of war."

Suddenly, the submersible’s collision alarm blared—a harsh, screaming siren that echoed through the hull.

The active sonar screen flashed blood red.

*WARNING: INCOMING ACTIVE TORPEDO GUIDANCE TRACK.*

*ORIGIN: LAKE BED SECTOR 4.*

Marcus lunged for the manual propulsion override, but the entire vessel shuddered violently as a deep-water shockwave slammed into our port ballast. The emergency lights died, instantly plunging the cabin into crimson emergency illumination.

Through the forward observation port, the dark depths of Lake Tahoe lit up with the glowing halogen headlamps of a massive, unflagged hunter-killer submersible rising directly from the underwater trench beneath us, blocking our escape to the surface.

Over the sub’s emergency comms channel, a cold, distorted voice crackled through the static:

*"Welcome to the family reunion, Hayes. Surface your vessel and prepare to be boarded, or we detonate the lake bed beneath you."*

May you like

Chloe screamed. Marcus gripped the tactical levers, his knuckles bone-white, looking at me with eyes that knew we had just entered an inescapable cage.

I raised my MPX, chambered the final round, and stared through the dark glass into the abyss.
