Chapter 5 - The Master Bedroom Standoff

The sound of heavy tires on the driveway didn't immediately register inside the villa. The sound system was pushing a bass-heavy track through the subwoofers embedded in the living room ceiling, and David was busy trying to open the primary master bedroom door on the second floor.
He jiggled the heavy satin-nickel handle. Nothing moved.
"Olivia!" David called out over the railing. "Where did the locksmith leave the key for the upstairs master suite?"
Olivia walked up the stairs, carrying her champagne glass, her cheeks flushed with wine. "He said he couldn't rekey that one. It’s got some digital fingerprint deadbolt linked directly to the home automation panel. Didn't you call him back?"
"No, I told him we’d figure it out," David said, kicking the bottom of the solid oak door with the toe of his designer loafer. "Why does she need a biometric deadbolt on a bedroom door? What is she hiding in here? Gold bullion?"
"Her medals, probably," Olivia sneered. "Her stupid little Navy certificates and Mom’s scrapbooks. Let me try."
She placed her thumb against the scanner. A sharp, red LED flashed, followed by a harsh, mechanical chime: *ACCESS DENIED. ATTEMPT LOGGED.*
"Ugh, break it open," Olivia demanded, crossing her arms. "I want that master closet cleared out tonight. I’m not living out of suitcases while Rebecca’s flight jackets take up forty square feet of wardrobe space."
David stepped back, sizing up the solid four-inch white oak slab. "I’m not kicking this down, Livvy. It’s custom architectural millwork. I’ll dent my shoe."
"Use a crowbar from the garage!"
Charles walked up the stairs behind them, puffing slightly from the ascent, his scotch glass still in hand. "What’s the hold-up?"
"Rebecca locked the master suite down with some military keypad," Olivia complained. "Dad, tell David to pop the hinge pins."
"Stand back," Charles ordered, stepping up to the keypad with the swagger of a man who believed his will alone could bend steel. He pressed the emergency override button and punched in his own birthdate: *0-8-1-4*.
*ACCESS DENIED. WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED ATTEMPTS WILL NOTIFY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.*
Charles scowled, his face reddening. "Insolent little... She programmed this to exclude my birthday?"
Before he could hit the keys again, every light inside the villa suddenly snapped off.
The music died mid-beat, leaving only the hum of the refrigerator in the sudden, cavernous silence.
"What happened?" Susan called out from the dark kitchen downstairs. "Did a fuse blow? Charles!"
A second later, the ceiling recessed fixtures flickered back on—not in their soft, warm white setting, but in an intense, sterile, ultra-bright emergency illumination. A low, rhythmic chime began pulsing through the hidden speakers in the walls.
Then, a synthesized voice, calm and unmistakably authoritative, filled the entire house:
*SYSTEM NOTICE: TACTICAL LOCKDOWN OVERRIDE ENGAGED BY TRUSTEE. ALL LOCAL CONTROLS SUSPENDED. ACCESS PERMITS REVOKED.*
Downstairs, the heavy motorized locks on the sliding glass walls engaged with a series of loud, mechanical *CLANGS*. The electric shades on all lower-level windows descended simultaneously, their heavy black-out fabric sealing out the exterior world like the blast shutters of a naval command center.
"What is this?!" Olivia shrieked, dropping her champagne glass. The crystal shattered on the oak flooring, spilling pale gold foam across the wood. "David! What did you touch?!"
"I didn't touch anything!" David shouted, his eyes wide as he looked at his smartphone. "My Wi-Fi just disconnected! The cellular signal dropped to zero—there’s a signal jammer running through the house router!"
Charles rushed down the stairs, his heart pounding in his chest. "Susan, get the front door open! Open the front door right now!"
Susan scurried to the massive, ten-foot pivot door at the main entrance, grabbing the handle and pulling with all her strength. The door didn't budge an inch. The multi-point electronic deadbolts had seated three inches deep into the structural steel frame.
"It’s locked!" Susan screamed, her voice cracking in pure panic. "Charles, we’re trapped in here!"

Outside the sealed front door, the heavy crunch of gravel signaled the arrival of several vehicles. Through the narrow side lights of the entryway, the unmistakable flashing blue and red emergency lights began painting the stone driveway in strokes of crimson and cobalt.
