Chapter 27 - The San Francisco Gala

The Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill was lit up like a fortress of glass and gilded marble.
Limousines stretched two blocks down California Street, their polished black fenders reflecting the flashbulbs of private defense industry press. Outside, the autumn chill was held at bay by heated canopies and private security guards wearing earpieces and bespoke charcoal suits.
Inside the grand ballroom, two hundred of the most powerful figures in naval aerospace procurement were drinking twenty-year-old single malt scotch and celebrating the "seamless acquisition" of Hayes Maritime Systems by Titan Defense.
Charles Hayes stood at the center of the room beneath the Austrian crystal chandeliers. He wore a tailored tuxedo that masked his seventy years with the crisp lines of old-money confidence. At his side, Sarah looked radiant in an emerald green silk gown that cost more than an enlisted sailor's annual salary. She held court with two admirals' wives, laughing softly into her crystal glass, playing the role of the grieving but stoic sister to perfection.
Across the room, Admiral Robert Sterling stood near the podium, reviewing the printed remarks for the evening’s keynote address. The gold braid on his dress blues gleamed under the spotlights.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced over the sound system, bringing the chatter to a polite murmur. "Please welcome the Chairman of Titan Defense, accompanied by our distinguished guest of honor, Mr. Charles Hayes, to accept a special commendation honoring the memory and legacy of Commander Evelyn Hayes."
Polite, rhythmic applause rippled through the room.
Charles stepped up to the mahogany lectern, his expression shifting in an instant to one of dignified, sorrowful pride. He adjusted the microphone with a practiced hand, taking a long, deliberate breath that sold the illusion of a broken-hearted father holding back tears.
"Thank you," Charles said, his voice resonant and commanding. "Many of you knew Evelyn as a dedicated officer. A brilliant tactician. But to me... she was simply my little girl. When she gave her life in service to our great nation three days ago, she did so knowing that the technology her family developed would safeguard the next generation of freedom."
Sarah dabbed a handkerchief to the corner of her eye from the front row. Several executives nodded in somber respect.
"In her memory," Charles continued, raising his head, "I am proud to announce the total consolidation of Hayes Maritime patents into Titan Defense’s advanced maritime shield program. A program that will—"
The heavy mahogany double doors at the rear of the grand ballroom didn't just open.
They swung wide with the force of an oncoming storm, slamming against the gilded walls with a sound like a rifle crack.
Every head in the room whipped around.

The silence that followed was suffocating.
