Chapter 29 - The Asset Freeze

The ballroom descended into controlled chaos.

Federal marshals entered from the service doors, sealing every exit. The private security contractors Charles had hired melted away into the hallways, knowing better than to stand between active federal warrants and their targets.

I turned back to the microphone, tapping it once. The feedback hum cut through the murmurs of the panicked crowd.

"For those of you holding stock in Titan Defense," I announced calmly, "trading on the New York Stock Exchange has been suspended by emergency order of the SEC as of 0600 this morning. All federal defense contracts involving Hayes Maritime Systems have been terminated for cause."

Sarah lunged toward the stage, her composure completely shattered. Her emerald dress was streaked with champagne, her hair disheveled.

"You ruined us!" she shrieked, clawing at the wooden riser as two federal agents stepped between us, pinning her arms behind her back. "You selfish bitch! That money was ours! Dad promised me that house! He promised me the foundation! You had a career, you had your pension—you had everything! We had nothing!"

"You had $110,000 of my blood money," I said, looking down at her without an ounce of warmth left in my chest. "You had a father who taught you that family was a currency you could spend twice. But the bill just came due."

Sarah spat at the floor, sobbing hysterically as the marshals escorted her toward the side corridor. Her cries faded behind the heavy fire doors, leaving only the murmuring silence of two hundred disgraced tycoons.

Charles sat slumped in the keynote chair behind the lectern, his cane lying on the carpet between his feet. He looked his full age now—a fragile, ruined old man stripped of his titles, his accounts, and his empire.

"You won't let them put me in a federal penitentiary, Evelyn," he wheezed, his eyes watery and bloodshot. "I’m your father. I built you. Everything you are... your strength, your discipline... you learned it from me."

"No," I replied, standing tall above him. "I learned how to survive from you, Charles. Because growing up in your house was the first war zone I ever had to navigate."

The NCIS agents moved in, lifting Charles by his elbows. They didn't use velvet gloves. They ratcheted the steel cuffs tightly around his wrists, snapping the locks into place.

As they dragged him down the aisle toward the waiting squad cars on California Street, Charles turned his head back one last time.

"You think this is over, Evelyn?" he snarled, the mask of the loving patriarch finally peeling away completely, revealing the venom underneath. "You think Sterling and I were the top of the chain? You didn't find the real vault. You only found what they wanted you to see."
