Chapter 31 - The Shadow Behind the Mask

The world slowed to a crawl. The barrel of Dmitri’s shotgun looked as wide as a tunnel, aimed directly at my heart. Isabella threw herself in front of me, her tiny arms outstretched like a human shield, mirroring the exact gesture Luca had made at the gala.
*NO!* she signed wildly at the towering monster. *NO HURT MAMA!*
Dmitri’s cold, scarred face flickered with momentary amusement. "Cute. Like father, like daughter. Both of you die together."
His finger began to squeeze the heavy steel trigger.
A sound ripped through the corridor—not gunfire, but the wet, horrific crunch of steel severing bone.
A foot of polished, dark titanium steel erupted through Dmitri’s chest, bursting out through his breastplate in a spray of black blood.
The Russian giant froze. His eyes bulged in shock, his mouth opening in a silent gasp of air as his lungs filled with blood.
Behind him stood Luca.
Luca was bleeding from half a dozen cuts, his left shoulder bandage completely soaked in red, but his face was that of the Grim Reaper himself. He had driven a combat machete entirely through the Vor’s back, pinning him where he stood.
With a primal, guttural roar of sheer fury, Luca twisted the blade and ripped it upward, kicking Dmitri’s massive body off the steel. The Russian hit the floor with a wet thud, twitching once before going completely still.
Luca dropped the blade, his chest heaving with ragged, agonized breaths. He staggered forward, his weapon slipping from his numb right fingers, and collapsed to his knees right before us.
"Luca!" I cried, falling forward and catching his heavy shoulders against my chest.
Isabella threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his bloodied collar, weeping openly. Luca pulled both of us into his arms, squeezing us so tightly our ribs creaked, his uninjured hand burying itself in my hair, pulling my mouth to his in a desperate, trembling kiss.
"I have you," Luca whispered hoarsely against my lips, his voice cracking with emotion. "I have you. You're safe. The strike team... they're all dead. It's over."
For a single, fleeting second, the nightmare seemed to break. We were alive. The mansion was secured. The Volkov leader lay dead at our feet. The family had survived the storm.
Then, Marco’s tactical radio, dropped on the bloody flagstones beside his trembling hand, crackled to life with a burst of static.
It wasn't one of our soldiers.
The voice coming through the speaker was smooth, refined, and chillingly familiar—a voice that should have been six feet underground for over five years. A voice that made Luca’s entire body lock into an absolute, petrified rigidity.
"Bravo, little brother," the voice purred from the speaker, laced with dark, mocking laughter. "You killed the Russian dog. You always were good at doing my dirty work."
Luca’s breath hitched in his throat. His face went more pale than when the sniper’s bullet had pierced his chest.
"Matteo..." Luca choked out, the name tearing from his lips like a curse from hell.
Matteo Moretti. Luca’s older brother. The firstborn son who had supposedly burned to death in a car bombing in Sicily five years ago—the death that had forced Luca to take the bloody mantle of Don.
"Did you really think the Russians had the brains to plan this, Luca?" the voice through the radio continued, chuckling softly. "They were just the battering ram to weaken your walls. Check the perimeter cameras on the south helipad, brother. I believe you left something very precious unguarded."
A shrill, secondary alarm began to wail throughout the estate—not the breach alarm, but the emergency vault alarm from the manor’s private treasury, where the Moretti bloodline archives and ancestral seals were kept.
"I didn't come to kill you today, Luca," Matteo whispered, his voice fading slightly as the sound of distant helicopter blades began to thump through the speaker. "I came to take back what is mine. And when I return for your crown... I think I will take your little mute translator and that bastard child as my prizes. See you soon, Don Luca."
The radio went dead with a snap of static.
Above us, through the shattered ceiling of the estate, the deafening thrum of a helicopter surged into the night sky, disappearing into the dark horizon.

Luca slowly rose to his feet, staring up at the smoke-filled sky, his hands clenched into fists so tight the stitches across his collarbone ripped open, fresh blood staining his shirt. His eyes burned with a madness that terrified me to my very soul.
"Marco," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register colder than death itself. "Mobilize every soldier in the country. We are going to war against a ghost."
