Chapter 14 - Bloodline Treachery

The Council Chamber of the Five Districts was located beneath the historic Saint Jude’s Cathedral—a cavernous, vaulted hall built of ancient stone, illuminated only by wrought-iron chandeliers and flickering candle sconces.
It was a place where territorial disputes had been settled for over a century, where men who ruled empires in the shadows met to divide the spoils of the city.
When the massive oak doors groaned open, every conversation in the hall died instantly.
Luca Moretti walked down the central aisle like an emperor entering a subjugated province. He wore a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit, his coat unbuttoned, his bearing towering and imposing.
On his left walked Claire, dressed in a stunning emerald-green gown, her chin lifted high, exuding the effortless grace of a queen.
And between us, holding both of our hands, walked Isabella.
She wore a crisp ivory dress with a tailored velvet blazer, her dark hair neatly plaited. Her posture was erect, her gaze steady, taking in the stone gargoyles, the long conference table, and the twelve hardened mob bosses seated around it without a single flinch of fear.
At the head of the opposing table sat Julian Sterling.
Sterling was a man of sixty, with slicked-back silver hair, cold grey eyes, and a predatory smile that smelled of courtroom backrooms and bought politicians. Beside him sat two of his corporate attorneys and several high-ranking syndicate elders.
"Luca," Sterling said smoothly, spreading his hands over the polished oak table. "We called an assembly of leaders to discuss serious matters of syndicate stability. We did not anticipate you bringing daycare to the high council."
A low rumble of dry laughter echoed from several of Sterling’s loyalists along the table.
Luca didn't laugh. He didn't even blink. He pulled out the heavy carved chair at the head of our side of the table and lifted Isabella gently into it. Then he pulled out the chair beside her for me before remaining standing behind his daughter, resting both of his massive, ringed hands atop the back of her chair.
The aura of pure, unadulterated menace radiating from Luca silenced the room faster than a drawn weapon.
"You called this council to question my fitness to lead," Luca’s voice rumbled through the stone chamber, deep and resonant as thunder. "You claim my bloodline is flawed. You claim my daughter is a liability to our interests."
Sterling sneered, leaning back in his leather seat. "Let’s not be sentimental, Moretti. We run a billion-dollar machine. It requires strength, dominance, and absolute communication. A mute child who flutters her fingers like a wounded bird is a public relations disaster and an operational target. The streets are already whispering that the Don of the East River has gone soft for a defective heir."
*Crack!*
Before Luca could draw his weapon, Isabella’s small, flat palm slammed down against the solid oak table with startling force.
The loud slap echoed off the ancient vaulted ceiling.
Every man at that table jumped in surprise.
Isabella stood up on her chair so that she was eye-level with Julian Sterling. Her small face was a mask of cold, unyielding disdain.
She lifted her hands. In the breathless silence of the underground cathedral, her fingers began to move.
Her signing was not hurried; it was majestic, precise, and razor-sharp.
Luca didn't translate. He didn't need to. Because Claire stepped forward, her voice ringing out through the chamber, translating Isabella’s signs with crystal clarity, her voice carrying the force of a gavel:
*“You hide behind grand tables and old men because you are terrified of what you cannot control,”* Isabella signed, Claire translating every gesture without a single tremor. *“You call my hands weak. But with these hands, I build art. With these hands, I write truth. With these hands, my family stands united.”*
Isabella shifted her gaze to the other elders seated around the table, her eyes piercing through their hardened masks.
*“My father does not protect me because I am weak,”* she signed, her movements broad and commanding. *“He protects me because I am his future. And a man who cannot respect his own blood is not a Don—he is just a coward waiting for a younger wolf to tear out his throat.”*
Isabella turned her piercing gaze back onto Sterling. Slowly, deliberately, she formed a single, universally understood sign: she tapped her temple, pointed her finger straight at Sterling’s chest, and then drew her thumb smoothly across her throat.
*“You think in shadows,”* Claire translated, her voice rising to a cold crescendo. *“We rule the light.”*
Dead silence reigned.
Several of the oldest capos at the table—men who had seen wars and bloodbaths spanning half a century—exchanged astonished glances.
One of them, Don Bernardo, an eighty-year-old veteran with a scarred visage, slowly leaned forward, a broad grin spreading across his wrinkled face.
"By God, Moretti," Bernardo wheezed with a hearty laugh, slapping the table. "She has more iron in her little finger than Sterling has in his entire spine!"
Sterling’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson. "This is absurd! This is a mockery of the Council!"
Luca leaned forward over Isabella’s shoulder, his eyes locking onto Sterling with the promise of absolute annihilation.

"You have five minutes to leave this city, Julian," Luca whispered, his tone so deadly the ambient temperature seemed to plummet. "Because if I see your face in New York when the sun sets... your hands will be the ones that never speak again."
