Chapter 11 - Shadows Behind the Spotlight

The echoes of the standing ovation had barely faded when the heavy mahogany doors of the gala’s private VIP lounge snapped shut behind us.
Outside, the press was in an absolute feeding frenzy. Flashbulbs strobed like lightning beneath the cracks of the double doors, accompanied by the muffled shouts of reporters desperate for a soundbite from the elusive Luca Moretti and his newly revealed family. But inside the sanctuary of the green room, the world dropped into a tense, breathless stillness.
Luca stood by the tall, arched window, his tuxedo jacket cast aside over the arm of a velvet sofa. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, revealing the taut tendons of his neck as he stared down at the manicured courtyard below. His broad shoulders were rigid as granite.
Isabella was curled up in an oversized leather armchair, her small hands resting quietly in her lap. Her formal silver slippers dangled just above the carpet. Despite the exhaustion painting faint lavender shadows under her eyes, her lips curved into a tiny, victorious smirk.
She looked up at me, catching my gaze. Her slender fingers flew with swift, fluid grace:
*Did you see their faces, Claire? The mean ladies in the front row dropped their glasses.*
A soft laugh escaped my throat, though my heart was still hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. I knelt beside her chair, gently brushing a stray lock of dark curl from her temple.
*I saw them, Peanut,* I signed back, my hands trembling ever so slightly with lingering adrenaline. *You conquered the world tonight.*
Isabella leaned forward, wrapping her arms around my neck, burying her face into my collarbone. Her warmth grounded me. For months, she had been made to feel like an embarrassment—a flaw in high society’s pristine veneer, hidden away by those who measured human worth by vocal cords and superficial perfection. Tonight, she had reclaimed her dignity with the fiercest poetry the city had ever witnessed.
"You were magnificent, both of you," Luca’s voice broke through the silence. It was low, gravelly, and laced with an undercurrent of raw possessiveness that sent a familiar shiver down my spine.
He turned from the window, crossing the room with silent, predatory grace. He didn't look at the world out there; his eyes were locked entirely on us. When he reached the chair, he dropped to one knee beside me, his large, calloused palm cupping Isabella’s cheek before his fingers slid into mine, intertwining our hands.
*My brave girl,* Luca signed to Isabella, his dark eyes shimmering with an affection so profound it completely erased the terrifying reputation of the Moretti syndicate kingpin. *I am prouder of you than words could ever say.*
Isabella beamed, signing back: *Claire held my hand when the lights came on. I wasn't afraid.*
Luca looked over at me. His gaze was burning, stripped of all defenses. "She calls you mother now, Claire. In front of the entire world. There is no going back from this."
"I don't ever want to go back, Luca," I whispered, tears pricking my eyelids. "She is my daughter in every way that matters."
A knock shattered the intimate bubble. Three sharp, measured raps.
Luca’s expression instantly hardened into carved obsidian. He rose to his feet in a single fluid movement, placing himself instinctively between us and the door. "Enter."
Marco, Luca’s most trusted lieutenant, slipped inside. His face was devoid of color, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles twitched under his skin. He carried a sleek silver tray covered by a black velvet cloth.
"Boss," Marco said quietly, his eyes darting toward Isabella before settling on Luca. "This was intercepted at the southern gate. Passed through three courier cutouts. It was addressed specifically to Miss Isabella."
The temperature in the room plunged below zero.
"What is it?" Luca demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous baritone.
Marco lifted the velvet cloth.
Resting on the silver platter was a pristine porcelain music box, intricately carved with golden angels. But its delicate lid had been brutally shattered. Wedged into the cracked porcelain was an antique dagger, its blade pinning a folded parchment written in crimson ink.
Luca stepped forward, pulling on a pair of black leather gloves from his pocket before unfolding the note. As his eyes scanned the words, a terrifying aura of bloodlust rolled off him in suffocating waves.
I couldn't help myself; I rose and looked over his arm.
Written in chilling, ornate script was a single message:
*“Hands can be broken just as easily as voices can be silenced. The Moretti bloodline belongs to the shadows, not a mute circus act. Enjoy your applause while you still have fingers to count your days.”*
Beside the note lay a single, severed black viper’s tail.
Luca’s jaw set into stone. He crumpled the paper in his fist, his knuckles turning stark white. He didn't shout. He didn't curse. The deadliest version of Luca Moretti was the one who went dead silent.
He turned his head toward Marco, his voice dangerously even. "Seal the perimeter. Lock down the estate. The Cassano remnants didn't die in the docks. They've allied with someone on the inside."
Isabella tapped my arm, her eyes wide with sudden confusion. She saw the tension, the rigid posture of the men. Her small fingers lifted tentatively:
*Claire? Is something wrong with my music box?*
I swallowed the lump of ice in my throat, forcing the calmest, warmest smile I could muster onto my face. I stepped in front of the gruesome display, blocking her line of sight, and signed back with steady hands:
*It’s just a broken toy, sweetheart. Your father is going to take us home now.*
Luca looked down at his daughter, then at me. The ruthless killer vanished for a split second, replaced by a father making a solemn, unbreakable vow.
May you like
"Marco," Luca murmured, his eyes locking with mine. "Bring the armored convoy around. If a single fly buzzes too close to my family tonight... burn the city to the ground."
