Chapter 10 - Hands That Speak of Forever

The Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton glittered beneath three towering crystal chandeliers.

It was the exact same venue where, one year ago, Vanessa Bellini had tried to silence a little girl.

Tonight, however, the room was filled with eight hundred guests—city officials, international philanthropists, business leaders, and families from the deaf community.

There was no tension. There were no armed bodyguards standing in the shadows with suspicious eyes. The air was filled with laughter, the music of a live jazz ensemble, and the beautiful, silent dance of hundreds of pairs of hands signing across the room.

It was the annual gala for the Moretti Children’s Foundation, and it was also the celebration of our wedding reception.

I wore an off-the-shoulder gown of ivory silk, my hair cascading in soft waves down my back, Luca’s diamond glittering brilliantly on my left hand.

Luca stood beside me, devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo, his arm wrapped possessively around my waist. The dark tattoos climbing his neck were visible above his crisp white collar—a reminder of where he had come from, and the protector he would always be.

At the head table, Leo sat proudly with my mother, laughing as he signed with several of his classmates from the academy.

The jazz music gently faded.

The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, honored guests... please welcome the chairman of the foundation, Mr. Luca Moretti, and our guest of honor, Miss Isabella Moretti."

The ballroom erupted into deafening applause. Guests from the deaf community raised both hands into the air, twisting their wrists in the beautiful, silent visual applause that filled the room like a field of fluttering white doves.

Luca took my hand, kissing my knuckles, before guiding Isabella up the steps to the stage.

Isabella was breathtaking. She wore an emerald-green silk dress, her dark curls pinned up with pearls. She looked poised, confident, and completely unafraid of the hundreds of eyes watching her.

Luca adjusted the microphone stand, stepping down to Isabella’s height.

He looked out over the sea of Chicago’s elite.

"A year ago," Luca began, his deep voice carrying through the immense hall without a tremor, "I believed that power was measured in silence. I thought that to protect my family, I had to force the world to fear us."

He looked down at Isabella, then across the room directly at me. His hazel eyes warmed with an eternal flame.

"I was wrong," Luca continued. "True power is the voice that refuses to be silenced. True strength is love that shields the innocent. For years, people in this city told me that my daughter had a limitation. They told me she would never fully belong in high society."

He paused. The entire room went dead silent.

Luca stepped away from the microphone.

He stood beside Isabella, turning to face the audience together.

Luca raised his hands.

Beside him, Isabella raised hers.

Together, father and daughter began to sign in perfect, synchronized harmony, while Luca spoke the words clearly into the lapel microphone:

*My name is Isabella Moretti,* they signed together.

*And I am not broken,* Isabella’s hands proclaimed, her movements sharp, elegant, and filled with radiant pride.

*My hands are not a distraction,* they continued, their fingers weaving words of fire in the air. *They are my heart. They are my music. They are my voice.*

Tears spilled over my cheeks as I watched the man I loved stand beside his daughter, completely unapologetic, defying every shallow prejudice the world had ever tried to impose upon them.

Isabella smiled—a radiant, dazzling smile that lit up the entire ballroom.

She turned toward me, pointing her index finger straight at where I stood beside the stage.

With one hand, she signed:

*And this is my mother, Claire.*

The audience gasped softly at the word *mother*.

*She taught me that my voice is a gift,* Isabella signed, looking at the crowd with absolute defiance and joy. *She taught me that when you love someone, you never ask them to be silent to belong.*

Luca reached out, catching Isabella’s hand in his, raising their joined hands high above their heads.

The entire ballroom rose to their feet in a thunderous standing ovation.

Governors, CEOs, socialites, and street-hardened men alike cheered at the top of their lungs, while hundreds of deaf children and adults raised their hands high, fluttering them in a sea of visual triumph.

Luca stepped down from the stage, extending his hand to me.

I walked up the steps, my ivory gown trailing behind me.

As I reached the center of the stage, Luca pulled me into his arms, kissing me deeply before the entire world. When he pulled back, Isabella threw her arms around both of our waists, anchoring us into a single, unbreakable circle.

Isabella looked up at the two of us, her eyes shining with tears of pure happiness.

She lifted her hands one last time, signing the words that would echo through the rest of our lives:

*We are heard. We are loved. We are home.*

Luca pulled his daughter and his wife tight against his heart, his hands moving over Isabella’s shoulders to sign the final, sacred truth of our lives:

*Forever, Peanut. Forever.*
