Chapter 13 - Cold Steel and Warm Hands

The Moretti estate had transformed into an impenetrable military stronghold.
By dawn, three dozen private security operators in tactical gear patrolled the gated perimeter of the fifty-acre property. Razor-wire reinforcements were strung across the tree line, and heat-sensing drones hummed continuously beneath the grey morning clouds.
Inside the grand kitchen, the atmosphere was deceptively quiet.
The scent of warm vanilla, cinnamon, and melted butter filled the high-ceilinged room. Isabella stood on a wooden stepstool beside the marble island, dusted from chin to apron in white flour. Her face was set in intense concentration as she carefully pressed heart-shaped cookie cutters into rolled-out dough.
I watched her from across the counter, sipping black tea, my body aching with deep-seated fatigue. The bruises from being jostled in the limousine were hidden beneath a soft cashmere sweater, but the mental exhaustion was harder to disguise.
Isabella looked up at me, noticing my distant stare. She picked up a pinch of flour, held it out, and blew it straight toward my face.
A cloud of white powder dusted my nose and cheeks.
"Hey!" I gasped, coughing through an involuntary laugh.
Isabella giggled silently, her shoulders bouncing with delight. Her hands moved swiftly:
*You look too serious, Claire! Cookies require happy faces, otherwise the sugar turns sour.*
I wiped the flour from my nose, feigning an outraged gasp, before picking up a handful of flour myself. *Oh, is that a threat, young lady?*
She raised her hands in surrender, laughing so hard she almost fell off the stool, her eyes sparkling with innocent radiance. It broke my heart how resilient she was. Just eight hours ago, we had been ambushed on a rain-drenched highway, yet here she was, reminding me that life goes on, that joy was an act of rebellion.
The heavy kitchen doors swung open.
Luca entered, still wearing the tactical turtleneck and slacks from the morning briefing. The dark circles under his eyes spoke of a man who hadn't slept for forty-eight hours. But the moment his gaze landed on Isabella covered in flour, the tension in his rigid posture visibly melted.
Isabella bounded off her stool, running across the kitchen tiles to throw her arms around his legs.
Luca caught her effortlessly, swinging her up into the air despite her floury hands transferring white handprints directly onto his clean black clothes. He pressed a kiss to her nose, not caring in the slightest.
*Look, Papa!* Isabella signed with one hand while balancing on his hip. *I made heart cookies for Claire. And a broken star for you because you look tired.*
Luca chuckled—a deep, resonant sound that warmed the cold corners of the estate. *A broken star? Am I falling apart, Peanut?*
*No,* she signed back playfully. *You just need sugar to glue your pieces back together.*
"She has you completely figured out, Moretti," I said, walking over with a dish towel to dab the flour from Luca’s shoulder.
Luca set Isabella down on the counter, then wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me firmly against his chest. In front of Isabella, his touch was respectful yet intensely loving. He lowered his forehead to rest against mine, breathing in the scent of my hair.
"Sterling called an emergency syndicate council meeting for noon today," Luca murmured, his voice dropping into that quiet, confidential register meant only for me. "He’s claiming I’ve become unstable. He’s petitioning the Old Guard to strip my commercial maritime licenses, claiming that harboring a disabled heir creates unacceptable operational risk."
My stomach dropped. "He’s using her deafness against you in front of the families?"
"He’s trying to," Luca replied, his jaw tightening. "In the old world, physical perfection was equated with survival. Sterling thinks he can rally the archaic elders against me by painting Isabella as a liability."
Suddenly, a small hand touched Luca’s cheek.
Isabella had watched his lips move. Though she couldn't catch every word, she was an expert at reading emotional micro-expressions. She signed deliberately, her movements crisp and decisive:
*Take me with you.*
Luca’s breath caught. He stared at his eight-year-old daughter. *Peanut, no. That is not a place for children. Those men are monsters.*
Isabella shook her head vehemently. Her eyes flared with an inner fire that was unmistakably Luca’s own blood.
*They think I am weak because I do not use my mouth,* she signed, her small hands moving with an electric intensity. *Take me, Papa. Let them see who I am. If they want to take our family away, let them look me in the eyes when they try.*
I looked at Isabella, stunned by the sheer ferocity of her spirit. Then I looked at Luca.

For the first time since I met him, the mighty Don Luca Moretti looked completely humbled by an eight-year-old girl.
