Chapter 15 - The Silent Sanctuary

Following the council meeting, we did not return to the city.

Luca took no chances. While his men dismantled Julian Sterling’s domestic operations across Manhattan, he moved Isabella and me to the family’s private coastal estate in Maine—a secluded clifftop manor known simply as *The Silent Sanctuary*.

The estate was breathtaking. Built of grey sea-stone and cedar timber, it stood atop jagged granite cliffs overlooking the roaring Atlantic Ocean. Dense pine forests surrounded the property on three sides, while the endless blue horizon stretched out on the fourth. The only sound was the crashing of waves against the rocks below and the whispering of the ocean breeze through the trees.

For three days, the madness of the syndicate, the flashbulbs, and the threats seemed a world away.

On the third evening, a golden sunset painted the sky in streaks of magenta and burnt orange. I stood on the wraparound veranda, wrapped in an oversized knit cardigan, watching the whitecaps crash against the cliff face below.

Behind me, the glass door slid open silently.

A warm, heavy jacket was draped gently over my shoulders, followed immediately by two strong arms circling my waist from behind. Luca rested his chin on the crown of my head, his chest rising and falling against my back in a rhythmic, comforting cadence.

"You're thinking too loud, Claire," he whispered against my hair.

I leaned back into his embrace, allowing myself to melt against his solid strength. "I'm just thinking about how strange life is. A few months ago, I was an elementary school sign language instructor living in a cramped one-bedroom apartment, struggling to pay rent. Now... I'm standing on a cliff with the most feared man in the state, helping raise an angel who defies the world."

Luca turned me gently in his arms until I was facing him. The setting sun caught the amber flecks in his dark eyes, softening the harsh contours of his face.

"You didn't just help raise her, Claire. You gave her back her life," Luca said softly, his thumbs tenderly tracing the line of my jaw. "Before you walked into that classroom, Isabella believed she was a ghost in her own home. She believed my grief had turned her into an embarrassment. You taught her to be proud. You taught *me* how to see her again."

My eyes misted with emotion. "She saved me too, Luca. She gave me a purpose I didn't know I was missing."

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box.

My breath caught in my throat.

He opened it to reveal a custom platinum ring. It wasn't an ordinary diamond band. The platinum was carved into two miniature, intertwining hands forming the American Sign Language sign for *I Love You*, set with a brilliant, flawless emerald in the center.

"Isabella helped me design it," Luca murmured, his voice thick with raw vulnerability. "She said you needed something that spoke without making a sound."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes. "Luca..."

He took my left hand in his, his fingers warm and steady. "I know who I am, Claire. I know the darkness that follows my name. But everything good left inside me belongs to you and Isabella. Marry me. Not just in secret, not just in an office—marry me before God, the world, and our daughter."

Before I could speak, a small tug on my sweater made us both look down.

Isabella was standing there in her fleece pajamas, holding a sketchbook against her chest. She had sneaked out onto the balcony without us noticing.

She flipped the sketchbook open. On the page was a beautifully colored crayon drawing of the three of us standing on this exact cliff, surrounded by a giant glowing heart.

Isabella looked up at me, her eyes shining with hopeful, eager light. Her small hands lifted:

*Say yes, Mama. Please? I want us to have the same last name forever.*

I couldn't hold back the sob of pure happiness. I fell to my knees on the wooden deck, wrapping both Luca and Isabella into a tight, weeping embrace.

"Yes," I choked out, laughing through my tears. "A thousand times yes!"

Luca dropped beside us, kissing my lips with a passion so fierce and tender it stole the breath from my lungs, while Isabella cheered silently, throwing her arms around our necks as the sun dipped beneath the Atlantic ocean.

May you like

For a brief, shining moment, we were untouchable.
