Chapter 8 - The Midnight Caller

By eleven o'clock that night, the city had dissolved into a torrential downpour. I had moved my mother to a small, private recovery room on the third floor of the clinic, paying cash for three days of strict anonymity under a false name.

I sat on a plastic chair in the corner of the room, my laptop open on my knees, staring at the screen.

The social media feeds were already ablaze.

A high-profile society blog had posted an exclusive article with a sensationalist headline:

*“SCANDAL AT THE ALTAR: RUNAWAY BRIDE LUCÍA MORALES DESTROYS SOCIETY WEDDING AFTER VIOLENT OUTBURST IN BRIDAL SUITE.”*

The article featured an unflattering, leaked photograph of Camila sitting in the bridal suite, weeping dramatically, holding her severed ponytail, with Bruno comforting her. Adrián was quoted directly:

*“We are heartbroken by Lucía’s sudden psychological breakdown. My family has offered our full support for her to receive medical attention, but due to violent behavior toward our guests, the engagement has been permanently terminated. Navarro Enterprises reserves the right to pursue legal damages for the destruction of venue property.”*

They were controlling the narrative. Within six hours, they had painted me as an unstable, violent gold-digger who lost her mind and assaulted the bridal party.

Suddenly, my burner phone buzzed on the bedside table.

It was an unlisted, international number. I hesitated, then pressed the receiver to my ear.

"Hello?"

"You took your sweet time walking out, little sister."

The voice on the other end was deep, gravelly, and carried a familiar aristocratic drawl, but it lacked the greasy arrogance of Adrián. It was colder. Sharper.

"Who is this?" I demanded.

"Mateo Navarro."

I went completely still. Mateo. Adrián’s older half-brother. The black sheep of the Navarro dynasty who had vanished from the country six years ago after a bitter, bloody corporate battle with their father. Rumor had it he was living in Madrid, managing private venture capital, completely exiled from the family trust.

"How did you get this number?" I asked, my voice guarded.

"Old Mateo, the lobby guard. He’s my uncle on my mother’s side," Mateo replied smoothly. "He called me the moment you walked out of the service lift barefoot with blood on your hands. He told me you took the black folder."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't play coy, Lucía. You're smarter than that," Mateo said, the sound of rain tapping against a window audible in his background. "You found *Project Mariposa*. You found the debt receipts for the Tulum development."

"And what do you care? You're in Spain."

"I was in Spain," Mateo corrected. "I landed at Benito Juárez International forty minutes ago. I'm currently sitting in the back of an armored SUV outside your hospital."

A jolt of fear shot through me. I stood up and peered through the blinds of the third-floor window. Sure enough, parked across the street under the dim streetlight was a black Suburban, its headlights cutting through the sheets of rain.

"If you think you're going to help your brother bury this—"

"I hate my brother," Mateo interrupted, his voice dropping into a harsh, venomous whisper. "He and his father stripped my mother of her shares when she was dying of cancer. They forged her will, just like they forged your intellectual property transfer. You have the encrypted keys to the shell company’s offshore ledger. I have the forensic accountants and the international press contacts. You want to survive this, Lucía? You want to keep your child safe?"

My breath stopped in my lungs. "How do you know about the baby?"

"Adrián’s a fool. He left Camila’s phone unattended on the coffee table while he was yelling at the doorman. Bruno texted Camila’s doctor asking if burning an ultrasound destroyed medical liability. My team monitors their communications."

A heavy silence hung between us. The rain lashed against the hospital glass.

"What do you want, Mateo?"

May you like

"Vengeance," he said simply. "And the complete, public destruction of Navarro Enterprises. Get your mother, pack your things, and come down to the basement parking bay. If you stay in that clinic another hour, Bruno’s men will find you. The war has started, Lucía. You can either fight it with me, or you can let them feed you to the wolves."
