Chapter 24 - The First Foundation Stone

By mid-summer, the blueprints had become reality, and the old colonial warehouse adjacent to our courtyard was a hive of constructive industry. Masonry crews repaired historical brickwork, carpenters installed towering pine beams, and local artisans helped paint the high-vaulted ceilings in bright, traditional colors.
On a bright Saturday morning, we held a modest, joyous groundbreaking and cornerstone-laying ceremony for the Morales-Vance Artisan Academy.
There were no corporate press conferences, no flashing paparazzi bulbs, and no politicians looking for a photo op. Just our family, our closest friends from the cooperatives, Director Morales (who had flown in from the capital as a guest of honor), and the artisans who would soon fill the halls with creativity and life.
We gathered around the base of the academy’s main entrance, where a smooth, carved stone block bearing our family crest and the academy’s founding date was mounted against the reinforced brick foundation.
Director Morales stepped forward, holding a silver trowel filled with fresh mortar. She handed it to my mother, who gently spread a smooth, even layer across the stone base. My mother then handed the trowel to me, her eyes shining with tears of quiet pride.
I stepped up to the cornerstone, spreading the mortar with steady, deliberate movements, before pressing the heavy commemorative plaque firmly into place with Mateo’s help.
"To the hands that weave our history," I spoke into the quiet, attentive gathering, my voice ringing clear and strong across the sunlit street. "And to the future that belongs to the truth."
The small crowd burst into enthusiastic applause, cheering and embracing as the first official stone of our new era was set in place.

Director Morales stepped up beside me, handing me a small, wrapped gift box tied with a simple silver ribbon. "A small housewarming gift from the federal financial crimes unit," she joked lightly. "Don't worry, it's completely legal and unencumbered by asset forfeiture."
I smiled, untying the ribbon and lifting the lid. Inside rested an exquisite, custom-engraved brass plaque bearing the official seal of the Republic of Mexico, honoring our academy as a protected national cultural landmark.
