Chapter 4 - The Shadow Behind the Silk

I didn't have time to fall apart. Grief is a luxury reserved for those who aren't being hunted, and in this city, with the Navarro family's political connections, I was very much at risk of being coerced, silenced, or worse.

I pulled out my phone and began photographing every single page of the agreement, every signature, and every financial addendum. I took clear, high-resolution shots of the debt reconciliation sheets, Bruno Vega’s banking receipts, and the fraudulent intellectual property assignment that Adrián had drafted, ready for me to sign during the wedding reception under the guise of "joint estate tax forms."

Just as I finished uploading the last image to three separate encrypted cloud drives, the front door’s electronic chime echoed down the hallway.

*Beep. Beep. Clack.*

The sound of heavy, rapid footsteps filled the parquet floors.

"Lucía!" Adrián's voice boomed through the apartment, harsh, breathless, and laced with towering rage. "Lucía, I know you're in here! The lobby doorman said you took the service lift!"

My blood turned to ice. I shoved my father’s ledger and the manila folder into my leather backpack, zipped it shut, and looked around the study. There was no second exit. The only way out was through the central gallery where he was currently walking.

"Lucía!"

He appeared in the double doorway of the study, his tuxedo jacket gone, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the throat and stained with sweat. His hair was disheveled, and his face was mottled with a furious, ugly crimson.

Behind him, hovering in the hall like vultures, were Bruno and Camila.

Camila had wrapped a designer silk scarf around her head like a turban to hide her butchered hair, but her mascara was smeared down her cheeks, and her blue eyes burned with absolute, venomous malice. Bruno stood with his arms crossed, a heavy, athletic man with knuckles already bruised from shoving my mother earlier.

"You humiliated me," Adrián spat, taking two aggressive strides into the room. He pointed an accusatory finger within inches of my nose. "Three hundred guests! My father's investors! The mayor was sitting in the front row! And you ran away like an insolent, hysterical child because of a pair of scissors?!"

I didn't back down. I stood straight, holding my backpack firmly against my chest, staring him dead in the eye.

"Camila assaulted my mother," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. "Bruno threw a sixty-year-old woman against a concrete wall. And you—my fiancé—stood there and told me to bow my head to her."

"Because you act like an animal!" Camila shrieked from the hallway, stepping forward, her voice rising to a glass-shattering pitch. "Look at what you did to me, you illiterate peasant! My hair will take five years to grow back! You ruined my face! You ruined my day!"

"Your day?" I turned to Camila, letting out a sharp, cold bark of laughter. "It was *my* wedding day, Camila. But then again, you’ve spent the last six months pretending it was yours, haven't you?"

"Shut your mouth, Lucía," Bruno warned, stepping past his sister, his broad frame blocking the light from the hallway. "You don't talk to my sister like that. You owe her an apology, and you owe this family compensation. Adrián, get her under control."

Adrián rubbed his temples, exhaling heavily as if he were the true martyr in the room. He stepped closer, dropping his voice into that patronizing, manipulative tone he had used on me for years whenever he wanted me to yield.

"Lucía, listen to me," he said, reaching out to grab my shoulder. I jerked away from his touch as if his skin were burning with poison. He scowled, his patience snapping instantly. "You’ve made your point. You embarrassed my family, you caused a scene, and you had your little tantrum. But it ends now. The guests are being served cocktails. The priest is waiting. My father told the press that there was a minor wardrobe emergency with the bride’s dress. We bought a designer backup gown from the boutique on the corner. You're going to put it on, you're going to apologize to Camila and Bruno, and we are going down there to finish this ceremony."

I stared at him, fascinated by the sheer depth of his delusion. "And if I don't?"

Adrián’s expression hardened into granite. The mask of the charming, progressive entrepreneur slipped completely, revealing the cold, calculating predator beneath.

May you like

"If you don't, you leave this apartment with nothing," he whispered coldly. "I will freeze your business accounts. I will tie you up in intellectual property lawsuits until you are penniless. You will never sell a single thread of your designs in this country again. You think you're an artist, Lucía? Without my capital, you're just a seamstress from the hills."
