Chapter 42 - The First Exhibition at Bellas Artes

The spring exhibition at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in downtown Mexico City arrived in mid-April, transforming the iconic white marble palace into a breathtaking temple of indigenous textile art.
The grand gallery halls were filled with monumental tapestries, intricate natural-dye displays, and our family’s restored historical archive documenting decades of Oaxacan weaving heritage. The event drew national media attention, cultural critics, and thousands of visitors eager to witness the vibrant cultural renaissance spearheaded by our apprentices.
On opening night, I stood near the center of the grand rotunda, wearing a tailored midnight-blue silk gown accented with delicate embroidery, watching dignitaries and art enthusiasts admire Sofia’s masterwork hanging proudly on the main gallery wall.
Beside me stood Mateo, impeccably dressed in a dark tuxedo, his hand resting reassuringly against the small of my back.
"You know," Mateo whispered, leaning down so his voice wouldn't carry across the crowded gallery, "for an international security operative who used to hide in the shadows, standing under crystal chandeliers in a national museum is a significant career pivot."
"You're adapting remarkably well, Commander," I teased lightly, turning my head to meet his gaze. "Though I have to admit, I still half expect you to check the ceiling vents for surveillance cameras."
Mateo chuckled, a rich, warm sound that blended with the ambient hum of the gallery. "No cameras, Lucía. Just art, culture, and a whole lot of people realizing that your family's legacy is bulletproof."

My mother walked over, joining us with a radiant smile, holding a glass of sparkling water. "The Secretary of Culture wants to give a formal toast in the main hall," she announced, her eyes shining with pride. "Come on, before the press corps swarms us."
Walking through the glittering halls of Bellas Artes hand in hand with Mateo, flanked by my mother and our brilliant students, I felt a deep, weightless sense of absolute peace. The journey from the dark, paranoid days of corporate warfare to this magnificent palace of culture had been long and steep, but every single step had been worth it.
