Chapter 44 - The Unbroken Horizon

As May transitioned into June, the summer heat settled over Mexico City with a rich, golden warmth that made the bougainvillea bloom in cascading shades of magenta and purple across every colonial wall in Coyoacán.

The Morales-Vance Artisan Academy was running with clockwork precision. The new regional outreach centers in Oaxaca and Michoacán were fully operational, training hundreds of young artisans in natural dyeing, traditional weaving, and legal copyright defense.

On a serene Friday afternoon, I stood in the main workshop hall, watching Sofia teach a class of incoming apprentices how to set up their warp threads on a newly repaired upright loom. Her movements were confident, graceful, and exact—the hallmark of a true master passing the torch to the future.

I slipped out into the sunlit courtyard, walking over to the central fountain where the cool water splashed gently against the stone basin.

Mateo was standing near the arched gateway, talking quietly with a courier who was dropping off the final architectural blueprints for the Oaxaca campus expansion. As the courier drove away, Mateo turned back, locking eyes with me across the courtyard.

He walked over, his stride unhurried and steady, stopping just inches away. He reached out, taking my hands in his, his fingers warm and reassuring.

"The Oaxaca blueprints look solid," Mateo reported softly. "Construction starts next Monday."

"Then everything is exactly where it needs to be," I smiled, looking up into his dark, unwavering eyes.

The past was a closed book, its debts paid in full, its dark shadows burned away forever by the unyielding light of truth. The horizon stretching out before us was wide, sunlit, and boundless.
