Chapter 9 - The Detective's Advice

Arthur decided to contact an old friend, a retired police detective named Miller.

They met at a quiet diner on the edge of town.

Arthur laid out all the evidence: the pills, the notes, the threats.

Miller listened intently, sipping his black coffee.

"Arthur, this is incredibly dangerous," Miller warned him.

"I can't just leave her there, Miller," Arthur pleaded.

"Child Protective Services needs physical evidence of abuse, or a confession," Miller explained.

"The note isn't enough?" Arthur asked desperately.

"A defense attorney would tear a vague note apart in court," Miller sighed.

"So what do we do?" Arthur demanded.

"We need her to speak on a recording, or we need to catch him in the act," Miller said.

Arthur thought about the hidden camera on his bus.

It recorded video and audio, primarily for monitoring student behavior.

If he could get Maya to talk while they were alone on the bus, it might work.

It was a massive risk, but it was their only viable option.
