Chapter 26 - A Promise Renewed

The police dragged a fiercely cursing Vincent Vance out of the house in heavy iron handcuffs.
Arthur lowered his rifle, carefully engaging the safety before placing it back in its secure locking case.
He walked over to Miller, who was writing up a rapid incident report on the hood of a police cruiser.
"We got him on breaking and entering, armed burglary, and threatening a witness," Miller said, looking highly satisfied.
"He is going back to federal prison for a very, very long time, Arthur."
Arthur let out a long, exhausted sigh, feeling the massive weight of the adrenaline finally leaving his aging body.
He looked at his shattered basement window, a small price to pay for ensuring Maya’s permanent safety.
The next morning, Arthur and Miller drove to the secure downtown hotel where Maya and her mother were hiding.
When they entered the hotel room, Maya rushed forward and hugged Arthur with crushing force.
"Is it over?" she asked, her voice muffled against his thick flannel shirt.
"It is completely over, kiddo," Arthur promised, patting her back gently.
"The man who was following you is in jail, and he can never hurt you or your mother."
Maya’s mother wept quietly in the corner, overwhelmed with profound gratitude for these two extraordinary men.
"I don't know how we can ever repay you, Arthur," the mother sobbed, wiping her face with a tissue.
"You don't owe me a single thing," Arthur replied softly, his eyes filled with genuine kindness.
"Seeing Maya grow into a strong, brilliant young woman is the only reward I will ever need."
Maya pulled back, wiping a happy tear from her eye, and smiled brightly at her protector.
"You know, my high school graduation is next week," Maya said, her voice filled with hope and excitement.
"I have a VIP ticket saved for you, right in the front row next to my mom."
Arthur’s heart swelled with an immense, overwhelming pride that he had not felt in decades.
"I wouldn't miss it for all the money in the world," Arthur promised, gently squeezing her shoulder.
They spent the rest of the morning packing up the hotel room, completely ready to return to their normal lives.
The shadow that had briefly darkened their world had been swiftly and ruthlessly eradicated.
Arthur knew that evil would always exist in the world, lurking in the dark corners of society.

But he also knew that as long as good men were willing to stand up and fight, the light would always win.
He was just a retired bus driver, but he had built a legacy of protection that would last for generations.
