Chapter 25 - Shattered Wood and Broken Glass

The silent alarm on Detective Miller’s encrypted smartphone vibrated intensely at exactly two o'clock in the morning.
Miller was parked three blocks away in an unmarked sedan, completely hidden under the thick canopy of a weeping willow tree.
He immediately radioed Arthur, his voice a tense, quiet whisper crackling through the earpiece.
"Arthur, we have movement at your back gate," Miller warned. "Stay away from the windows."
Arthur was sitting in complete darkness in his hallway, his hunting rifle resting securely across his knees.
He watched the live feed from the backyard camera on his tablet, his breathing slow and incredibly controlled.
Vincent Vance was creeping across the lawn, dressed in entirely black clothing, holding a heavy steel crowbar in his right hand.
Vance bypassed the main doors, clearly knowing that they would be heavily locked and deadbolted.
Instead, he moved toward the small, fragile window of Arthur’s basement, planning to slip into the house undetected.
With a brutal, sweeping motion, Vance smashed the basement window, the sound of breaking glass echoing loudly in the quiet night.
Arthur did not flinch, allowing the intruder to commit completely to his disastrous mistake.
Vance squeezed his large frame through the shattered window, dropping down onto the concrete floor of the dark basement.
He turned on a small tactical flashlight, the narrow beam of light sweeping across Arthur's dusty tools and old boxes.
Arthur slowly stood up, quietly making his way to the top of the basement stairs.
He knew every single creaky floorboard in this house, and he moved with the silent grace of a ghost.
Down below, Vance found the wooden staircase and began to creep upwards, his heavy boots thudding softly.
"I know you're up here, old man," Vance whispered into the dark, his voice dripping with venomous hatred.
"You took my family's money, and now I am going to take everything you love."
Arthur waited until Vance reached the landing before reaching out and flipping the main hallway light switch.
The sudden, blindingly bright light flooded the staircase, causing Vance to stumble backward and cover his sensitive eyes.
Arthur stood at the top of the stairs, his rifle pointed squarely at the center of Vance’s chest.
"You have exactly five seconds to drop that crowbar, or I will put a hole in you," Arthur said, his voice as cold as ice.
Vance froze, his eyes widening in pure shock as he stared down the barrel of the heavy weapon.
He had expected to find a terrified, helpless senior citizen cowering in his bed, begging for mercy.
Instead, he found a seasoned, unyielding protector who was more than willing to pull the trigger to defend his family.
Before Vance could decide whether to fight or run, the heavy front door crashed open with explosive force.
Detective Miller and three heavily armed police officers flooded into the hallway, their weapons drawn and leveled.

"Police! Drop the weapon and get on the ground right now!" Miller roared, his voice shaking the walls of the house.
Vance slowly dropped the crowbar, realizing he had walked directly into a perfectly executed, devastating trap.
