Chapter 22 - The Unmarked Envelope

The phone rang three times before the gruff, familiar voice of retired Detective Miller answered the line.

Arthur did not bother with pleasantries, diving straight into the terrifying details of the black truck and the threatening letter.

Miller listened in absolute silence, his seasoned detective brain already processing the new threat.

"I will be at your house in fifteen minutes, Arthur," Miller said firmly, his voice devoid of any panic.

"Do not touch the letter anymore, and keep your doors locked until I get there."

Arthur paced his living room like a caged lion, his mind racing through a hundred different horrific scenarios.

He was not afraid for his own life, having lived a long and fulfilling one, but he was absolutely terrified for Maya.

If this mysterious man wanted revenge, he would eventually figure out that Maya was Arthur’s greatest vulnerability.

Fifteen minutes later, Miller pulled into the driveway, stepping out of his car with a grim, determined expression.

He walked into Arthur’s living room, immediately snapping on a pair of blue latex gloves to examine the handwritten note.

"This is not a prank, Arthur," Miller stated quietly, holding the paper up to the natural light of the window.

"The handwriting is highly aggressive, deliberately pressed hard into the paper to convey intense anger."

Arthur crossed his arms, his brow furrowed in deep concentration.

"The man we put away, did he have any known associates who would wait three years to seek revenge?" Arthur asked.

Miller sighed heavily, pulling a small leather notebook from his jacket pocket to jot down some details.

"He was involved in some shady gambling rings before he latched onto Maya's mother," Miller explained slowly.

"He owed money to some very dangerous people, people who considered him a useful asset before he got locked up."

Arthur felt a chill run down his spine, realizing the scope of this new danger was completely unknown.

"We need to warn Maya and her mother immediately," Arthur insisted, reaching for his phone again.

"No, wait," Miller commanded, holding up a hand to stop him.

"If we panic them now without knowing who is out there, we might make them act unpredictably and put themselves in danger."

"So we just wait for this lunatic to make his next move?" Arthur demanded, his voice rising in frustration.

"We go on the offensive," Miller replied, a dangerous glint appearing in his sharp eyes.

"I still have access to the city's traffic camera network through my friends at the precinct."

"We are going to find out exactly who owns that black truck, and we are going to hunt him down first."

Arthur nodded slowly, feeling a small sense of relief that he was not fighting this battle alone.

He looked at the beautiful wooden plaque Maya had given him, resting proudly on his mantle.

He had promised to protect the vulnerable, and he was fully prepared to keep that promise, no matter the cost.

This new monster had made a catastrophic mistake by threatening an old man with nothing left to lose.
