Chapter 14 - The Aftermath

The aftermath of the arrest was chaotic and heartbreaking.
Maya and her mother were brought to the police station for questioning.
Arthur watched through a two-way mirror as the mother broke down.
When Detective Jenkins told her the truth, the mother screamed in agony.
She had genuinely believed the man loved them.
She had no idea about the late-night visits to Maya's bedroom.
She had no idea about the birth control hidden on the school bus.
Maya sat in a separate room, wrapped in a thick blanket.
She looked incredibly small, but the terror in her eyes was gone.
Jenkins allowed Arthur to step into the room for just a moment.
Maya looked up and saw the old bus driver standing in the doorway.
She stood up, rushed across the room, and hugged him tightly.
"Thank you," she whispered into his shoulder, crying freely.
Arthur patted her back, tears streaming down his own face.

"You're safe now, kiddo," he promised.
"He can never hurt you again."
