Chapter 6 - The Architecture of Deceit

They hauled me across the east corridor, dragging my feet along the hardwood as thunder rattled the stained-glass windows of the grand gallery. Blackwood Manor had belonged to my ancestors for four generations, built during the gilded age with sprawling subterranean cellars, service passageways, and dumbwaiters designed to keep servants invisible. I had played in these halls as a boy, believing them to be castles of wonder. Now, every decorative moulding and hidden alcove felt like the bars of a slaughterhouse.
They shoved me down the back stairs toward the wine cellars. Marcus followed behind us, a blood-soaked linen napkin pressed tightly against his crooked, swelling nose, his eyes burning with malicious hatred.
"You broke my nose, Daniel," he hissed through his teeth. "When this is done, I'm personally going to take a hammer to your knees."
"You won't survive the trial, Marcus," I spat, struggling against the plastic ties biting into my wrists. "Clara is alive. Lily saw her. A hundred people in the ballroom saw her."
"A hundred drunk socialites saw a dirty woman," Vanessa replied coldly, leading the way with a tactical flashlight. "By morning, the narrative will be clear. Daniel Blackwood, overwhelmed by grief and alcohol on the night of his engagement, suffered a severe psychotic break. He attacked his attorney, assaulted his fiancée, and locked himself in the family vaults with a kidnapped vagrant. Marcus will file for emergency conservatorship. And since you'll be legally incapacitated, I will manage Blackwood Enterprises on your behalf."
It was brilliant. It was diabolical. And with the local judiciary bought and paid for by the family's extensive trust funds, it was entirely feasible.
They reached the heavy oak door again. The brass lock hung open, the key still embedded in the cylinder.
Vanessa paused before the threshold, her flashlight beam cutting through the damp darkness below. "Take him down. Chain him to the south wall."
One of the guards shoved me down the stone stairs. I stumbled, crashing hard onto my shoulder on the icy flagstones. Pain flared through my collarbone, but I forced myself to sit up.
In the corner of the cellar, slumped on the same rusted cot where she had spent three years of her life, sat Clara. Her eyes widened in terror as she saw me bound and bruised. Beside her, huddled against the cold stone, was Lily. They had captured her before Evans even brought them upstairs.
"Daddy!" Lily cried, trying to scramble toward me, but Evans grabbed her by the arm and shoved her back onto the cot.
"Leave the child alone!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with fury as she lunged at Evans with clawed fingers. Evans easily shoved the frail woman back down, sneering at her weakness.

"Quiet, both of you," Vanessa commanded, stepping into the cellar. Her high heels clicked ominously against the stones. She turned to me, tossing a fresh set of documents onto the dirt floor before my feet.
"We have twenty minutes until midnight, Daniel," Vanessa said, checking her gold watch. "Sign the transfer of Blackwood Maritime and the Cayman holdings. Or Marcus puts a bullet through your daughter’s head. Right here. Right now."
