Chapter 10 - Ashes of the Dynasty

I threw myself flat against the damp stone floor near the drainage trench, pressing my face into the cold mud where a thin layer of breathable air remained. Above me, Blackwood Manor was being consumed by an inferno. The roar of the fire was deafening, a monstrous beast devouring a century of wealth, secrets, and blood-stained heritage.

Through the crackling flames, I could hear sirens wailing in the distance—fire trucks, police cruisers, the real authorities finally arriving at the gates.

Water began trickling through the cracks in the foundation as the manor's ancient fire-suppression pipes burst from the extreme heat. A deluge of cold, rusty water rained down through the smoking rubble, beating back the wall of fire near the coal chute.

Coughed up black soot, I forced my battered body off the ground. My hands were scorched, my tuxedo in tatters, but the adrenaline coursing through my veins kept the pain at bay. Using the iron framework of the collapsed chute, I dragged myself upward inch by inch, pulling my bruised limbs through the narrow opening until my head broke through the exterior grate into the freezing night air.

Rain pounded against my face. It tasted sweet, pure, and clean.

I pulled myself onto the muddy lawn of the west garden, gasping for air, rolling onto my back.

A few yards away, kneeling in the wet grass, Clara held Lily tight against her chest. Both of them were covered in black soot and trembling violently under the torrential downpour, but they were alive. When Lily saw me, she let out a piercing cry and threw herself across the mud into my arms.

"Daddy! Daddy, you're alive!"

"I'm here, baby. I'm right here," I sobbed, holding her so tightly I thought my cracked ribs would give way. Clara crawled toward us, collapsing into the circle of my arms. We sat there in the rain, three ghosts huddled together, watching the great manor burn.

Flames were leaping fifty feet into the night sky from the second-story windows. Guests in soaked evening wear were gathered at the edge of the iron gates, held back by arriving state troopers and firefighters.

Suddenly, a blood-curdling scream pierced through the sound of the rain.

Stumbling out from the burning ruins of the conservatory was Vanessa. Her white gown was blackened, scorched into tattered rags, her face smeared with soot and blood. She was clutching her leather briefcase to her chest like a drowning woman clinging to a buoy.

Behind her, emerging from the smoke, Marcus staggered forward, his hands raised in surrender as a dozen state troopers leveled their assault rifles at him.

"Freeze! On the ground! Both of you!" the tactical commander shouted through a megaphone.

Marcus immediately dropped to his knees in the mud, weeping, completely broken. But Vanessa didn't stop. She turned, her wild, bloodshot eyes locking onto Clara, Lily, and me sitting in the wet grass.

A horrifying, manic grin spread across her ruined face.

"You think this is over, Daniel?" she screamed through the downpour, ignoring the red laser dots converging on her chest. "You think you won?!"
