Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

I pulled back from Clara, my hands cradling her hollow cheeks. Her pulse fluttered beneath my thumbs like the wings of an exhausted sparrow. Above us, the ballroom had erupted into utter pandemonium. Women were shouting, men were demanding explanations, and the heavy thud of security guards rushing the corridor vibrated through the stone ceiling.
"Daddy!" Lily screamed from the top of the stairs. "She's running! Vanessa is running!"
The snap of high heels echoed sharply against the polished marble above. Vanessa had turned on her heel and bolted toward the private library that led to the estate’s west terrace.
"Guard the door!" I bellowed up the stairs, my voice ringing with a fury I had never known I possessed. "Nobody leaves this ballroom! Security, close the gates!"
I hauled Clara gently into my arms. She weighed almost nothing, her light frame like that of a bird starved of winter food. As I carried her up the damp stone steps into the blinding light of the chandelier, the crowd parted in absolute horror. Elegant socialites recoiled, covering their mouths, while others raised their phones to film the ghost of Clara Blackwood returning from the grave.
"Shut those cameras off!" I roared, my eyes locking onto the estate’s head of security, Evans. "Evans, take Clara and Lily to the master suite. Lock the steel bolts. If anyone approaches them—anyone at all—shoot them. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, Mr. Blackwood," Evans stammered, pulling his sidearm from beneath his jacket, his veteran discipline overcoming his sheer bewilderment.
Lily threw her arms around Clara’s waist, burying her face into her mother’s rags, sobbing uncontrollably. "Mommy... I knew you were singing. I heard you through the vents..."
"I'm here, baby. I'm right here," Clara whispered, her fingers knotting into Lily's hair as Evans ushered them toward the private elevator.
With my family secured, the fog of shock cleared, replaced by an ice-cold, murderous clarity. I marched across the ballroom, shoving past shocked relatives and business partners. The double mahogany doors of my private study were swung wide open.
Inside, drawers were pulled out and emptied onto the antique Persian rug. Files, passports, and envelopes were scattered everywhere. In the center of the room stood Vanessa, clutching a leather briefcase. When she saw me standing in the doorway, she froze, backing up against the massive bay window that overlooked the rain-slicked gardens.
"Daniel, please," she whispered, her chest heaving under her silk gown. "You don't understand the whole picture. I did this for us. For our future."
"You locked my wife in a dungeon beneath my own house," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper as I advanced toward her. "You let me mourn her. You watched me cry myself to sleep for eighteen months before you slithered into my bed."
"She was going to ruin everything!" Vanessa screamed, the mask finally peeling away completely, revealing the venom underneath. "She found out about the offshore restructuring! She was going to take Lily and half of Blackwood Enterprises! If she spoke, your father's legacy would have dissolved into dust!"
May you like
"My father's legacy was built on honor," I snarled, stepping into her space. "Not on human cages."
Vanessa smiled then—a cold, twisted sneer that sent a chill straight down my spine. "You think I did this alone, Daniel? Look behind you."
