Chapter 33 - The Midsummer Celebration

To mark our official transition into the community and celebrate the completion of the homestead, we decided to host a modest midsummer gathering on the wide front lawn of the timber-frame house.
Our guest list was small, sacred, and true: old Miller, who had helped us frame the sills; Dr. Henderson, who had cared for Lily; and Marcus, who had driven up from the county seat where his whistleblower advocacy office was thriving, bringing along Arthur Sterling for the weekend.
The evening of the summer solstice was breathtaking. The sun lingered late into the evening, painting the western sky in magnificent strokes of violet, amber, and molten gold. A long wooden table set up on the grass was laden with fresh roasted vegetables from our garden, artisan bread, and a massive berry pie baked by Clara and Lily.
Arthur Sterling, wearing a comfortable linen shirt instead of his old courtroom suits, raised his glass of sparkling cider as the sun dipped below the ridge.
"To foundations that don't crack under pressure," Arthur toasted, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet lawn. "And to the architects of truth who showed us all how a real home is built."
"Hear, hear," Marcus echoed, smiling warmly as he clinked his glass against Arthur's.

As we sat around the table sharing stories, laughter, and gratitude, I looked around at the faces of our chosen family. We had all paid a heavy price to reach this moment, but looking at the bright, unclouded joy shining in Lily’s eyes and the deep, abiding peace in Clara’s smile, I knew that every single trial had been worth it.
The Gilded Cage was a distant, dead memory. The world we lived in now was real, green, and boundless.
