Chapter 27 - The Unclouded Dawn

We rode back down the mountain trail under a brilliant canopy of winter stars, the bitter cold of the night air no longer feeling hostile, but rather like a cool, refreshing baptism.

When we returned to the Miller cottage, Lily was still fast asleep in her warm bed, and Miller was sitting by the hearth reading an old book of poetry, a pot of fresh coffee waiting on the stove for us.

We didn't explain the details of our midnight excursion. We simply drank the hot coffee, thanked the old carpenter for watching our daughter, and walked back out into the crisp night air to stand on the porch of the half-built timber house that awaited the spring thaw.

The wooden skeleton of the new home stood tall and proud against the starlit sky, its solid beams anchored deep into the Adirondack bedrock. There were no hidden wires here, no secret surveillance loops, no dead-man's switches, and no masks to hide behind.

Clara stood beside me, her hand resting naturally in mine, her fingers interlaced with my own. The silver swallows pendant caught the moonlight, shining with a pure, unblemished brilliance against her collarbone.

The nightmare was well and truly over. The winter of our lives had broken, and the spring waiting just over the horizon would be ours to design, plant, and harvest in the clear, unclouded light of day.

We turned our backs to the dark forest, wrapped our arms around each other, and walked down the path toward our home, ready to start over. Always.
