Chapter 11 - The Vault Beneath the Grave

"Drop the briefcase! Drop it now!" the troopers yelled, closing the distance, their boots splashing through the flooded lawn.
Vanessa laughed—a high, unhinged cackle that chilled me to the marrow despite the blazing heat of the burning house.
"You found your wife, Daniel," she screamed, backing toward the deep stone fountain in the center of the terrace. "But you didn't find what she was hiding! You never asked *why* I locked her up instead of killing her!"
I slowly stood up, stepping in front of Clara and Lily, my eyes locked on the woman who had terrorized my life. "You locked her up to steal the offshore accounts, Vanessa. It's done. It's over."
"No!" Vanessa shrieked. "The offshore accounts were pocket change! Look at her, Daniel! Ask her about Geneva! Ask her about the summer before she disappeared!"
I glanced down at Clara.
In the flickering light of the flames, Clara wasn't looking at Vanessa with anger or disgust. She was looking at her with sheer, paralyzed terror. Her face was paler than it had been in the cellar. Her hands were shaking so hard she couldn't even hold Lily's shoulder.
"Clara?" I whispered, a sickening knot forming in my gut. "What is she talking about?"
"Daniel... don't listen to her," Clara choked out, her voice barely audible over the pounding rain. "Please... don't let her speak..."
"She had a twin, Daniel!" Vanessa laughed wildly as the police officers tackled her to the muddy ground, pinning her arms behind her back and forcing her face into the wet grass. Even with her cheek pressed into the dirt, she twisted her neck to scream at me. "The woman in the cellar... the woman you just dragged out of the fire... she isn't Clara! She took Clara's place four years ago!"
The entire world seemed to stop spinning. The sirens, the rain, the roar of the fire—everything faded into absolute silence.
"You're lying," I whispered, my voice trembling.
"Check the pendant, Daniel!" Vanessa shrieked as handcuffs clicked around her wrists. "Check the back of the swallows! Clara's father engraved a serial number on the clasp! Ask her what the number is! She doesn't know! Because Clara Blackwood died in a hotel room in Zurich... and her sister walked into your life to steal your fortune!"
Slowly, terrifyingly, I turned around to look at the woman I had just saved from the grave.

The woman who held my daughter looked up at me through wet, matted hair. Her eyes were completely wide.
And for the first time since that sealed oak door had clicked open, she didn't say a single word.
