Chapter 8 - Darkness and Recoil
The shatter of the searchlight plunged the muddy clearing into absolute darkness, illuminated only by the frantic muzzle flashes of automatic gunfire. Bullets chewed through the wet bark of the surrounding oak trees, sending splinters flying into the rainy night air.
Inside the concrete culvert, Claire pressed Emma tightly against her chest, shielding the feverish child’s body with her own while Garrett and the remaining Moretti guards laid down heavy suppressive fire toward the tactical vehicles.
"Boss is clear of the line of fire!" Garrett shouted over the roar of gunfire. "Keep firing! Don't let them advance!"
Outside, Vincent moved with supernatural speed, utilizing the shadows of the storm and the blinding sheets of rain to close the distance on the lead tactical vehicle. The black tattoos across his neck and arms rippled with every muscle contraction as he fired with ruthless precision, neutralizing the remaining guards who spilled out of the armored doors.
Within seconds, the gunfire stopped, replaced only by the heavy patter of rain and the groans of the wounded mercenaries in the mud.
Vincent walked slowly toward the driver's side door of the lead vehicle. He pulled it open, grabbing the terrified driver by the collar of his tactical vest and dragging him out into the mud.
"Where is she?" Vincent demanded, his voice a low, lethal rumble that echoed off the concrete walls.
The driver gasped, trembling violently as Vincent's pistol barrel pressed firmly against his forehead. "She... she's at the downtown airfield! Sophia booked a private jet to Geneva an hour ago! She has the master server hard drives—she sold out the entire family to the European cartel!"
Vincent’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He struck the man across the temple with the heavy butt of his pistol, dropping him instantly into the mud.
Turning sharply, Vincent strode back toward the concrete culvert. He ducked inside out of the rain, his black shirt drenched, his dark wavy hair plastered to his forehead. He knelt down immediately beside Claire and Emma.
Emma’s breathing had slowed, but her skin was still burning hot. She looked up at him with half-closed eyes, clutching her beige stuffed rabbit.
"Daddy... are we safe now?" Emma whispered softly.
Vincent reached out, gently brushing a lock of light-brown hair away from her bandaged forehead. His voice was thick with emotion as he looked into her tired eyes. ☕
"We're going to a real doctor right now, sweetheart. I promise you," Vincent said, before looking up at Claire. Her face was still guarded, but the anger had shifted into an urgent, fragile alliance.
"The downtown airfield," Vincent told Claire quietly. "Sophia is trying to flee the country with the master servers. My helicopter is waiting at the secondary extraction ridge. We take Emma straight to the private medical ward in the city, and then I finish this."
Claire hesitated for only a fraction of a second. She looked down at her sick daughter, then back at Vincent’s unwavering gaze, and slowly nodded.

"Let's go," Claire said, her voice steady and resolute.
As they loaded into the newly captured tactical vehicle to race toward the extraction ridge, the dashboard radio suddenly crackled to life, broadcasting a chilling final message from Sophia Reynolds herself.
