Chapter 2 - The Red Override
The brilliant video lights flickered as the master security monitors flashed a warning red. The chime of the private elevator echoed through the penthouse suite, shattering the tense silence of the bedroom. Vincent remained frozen on his knees beside the mattress, his hand hovering inches from the overnight bag, while Claire clutched feverish Emma tighter against her chest.
"Stay here," Vincent ordered, his voice dropping into its cold, commanding mafia-boss register. He stood up swiftly, the black tattoos on his forearms flexing as he stepped away from the bed.
Vincent strode toward the hallway, his polished black shoes clicking sharply against the marble floor. He reached for the heavy tactical pistol locked in his study wall safe, his blue-gray eyes narrowing. The elevator doors at the end of the long corridor parted with a soft pneumatic hiss, revealing an empty car—and a small, bloodstained envelope resting on the floor of the cabin.
Back in the bedroom, Claire did not wait. She knew better than to trust the security systems of a man whose life was built on violence. Moving with silent urgency, she hoisted the packed overnight bag over her shoulder, cradling six-year-old Emma with her other arm. Emma’s breathing was shallow, her forehead burning through the white bandage.
"Mommy... where are we going?" Emma whispered, her voice weak and trembling as she clutched her beige stuffed rabbit.
"We're going somewhere safe, sweetie," Claire whispered back, her voice thick with unshed tears.
As Claire stepped out into the hallway toward the private stairwell exit, a heavy crash echoed from the foyer below. The sound of splintering wood and muffled shouts penetrated the heavy doors. Vincent had already vanished down the west wing toward the intruder, leaving the master bedroom vulnerable.
Claire hurried down the curved back staircase, her light-brown hair swaying around her shoulders, her soft white lace nightgown brushing against the handrail. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but Emma's fever was spiking again, her small body shivering violently despite the warm indoor air.
Reaching the ground-floor exit that led directly to the private underground garage, Claire pushed the heavy metal door open. The dim fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a harsh industrial glow over Vincent’s row of luxury vehicles.
She ran toward her own unassuming sedan parked in the corner stall, her heart pounding against her ribs. She pulled open the back door, gently laying Emma across the back seat with her stuffed rabbit, and quickly climbed into the driver's seat.

Her fingers shook as she inserted the key into the ignition. The engine sputtered to life, roaring quietly in the concrete enclosure. She threw the car into reverse, ready to hit the accelerator and vanish into the Chicago night before Vincent could return.
Suddenly, the garage’s automated exit gates locked shut with a deafening metallic clank. The emergency strobe lights began to flash a blinding red. In the rearview mirror, Claire watched as the garage elevator doors slid open once more, and a tall figure stepped out into the shadows, holding a ringing phone that projected Sophia Reynolds' voice into the empty garage.
