Chapter 6 - The Collapsing Vault
A massive shower of concrete dust and splintered timber rained down from the ceiling as the wine cellar above buckled under the explosive charge. The emergency backup generators flickered and died, plunging the subterranean tunnels into a dim, amber-tinted emergency glow.
"Keep moving! Don't stop!" Vincent roared over the roaring din of collapsing masonry, grabbing Claire’s hand and pulling her forward into the damp drainage tunnel while cradling Emma safely under his other arm.
Garrett and the guards led the way through the winding brick corridor, their tactical lights cutting through the thick dust. The air was heavy with the smell of wet earth, sulfur, and aged wine from the shattered racks above.
In Claire’s arms, Emma whimpered, her feverish body shivering violently as the cold draft of the tunnel hit her. "Mommy... it's too loud... I want to go home..." the little girl sobbed, burying her face against Claire's shoulder and clinging desperately to her beige stuffed rabbit.
"We're almost safe, my angel, just keep holding on," Claire whispered fiercely, her voice cracking as she fought through the exhaustion burning in her legs. She squeezed Vincent’s hand back, realizing that in this moment of absolute catastrophe, the walls he had built around his family had finally crumbled, leaving only survival.
They rushed deeper into the labyrinth of tunnels, moving away from the epicenter of the blast. After what felt like hours of agonizing running, the brick walls gave way to a massive concrete drainage basin that opened up into the dense, foggy woods a mile beyond the Moretti estate's perimeter wall.
Rain fell in sheets, soaking their clothes instantly. The cold Chicago downpour hit Claire’s soft white lace nightgown and Vincent’s fitted black shirt, washing away the dust and sweat.
Vincent set Emma down gently inside a dry concrete culvert beneath the overpass, shielding her from the driving rain with his broad shoulders. He pulled a satellite communicator from his belt, punching a rapid sequence of override codes.
"Marcus, report," Vincent commanded into the comms device.
"Boss, we're at the secondary extraction point near the river," Marcus's voice crackled through the static, laced with tension. "We've got an armored transport ready, but... boss, you need to see this feed. The Syndicate didn't just target the estate. They've hit every major Moretti safehouse in the tri-state area simultaneously."
Vincent’s expression darkened further. He looked down at Emma, who was quietly wheezing in her mother’s arms, her breathing growing alarmingly shallow. The stress, the cold rain, and the untreated 102-degree fever were pushing the six-year-old’s fragile body to a dangerous breaking point.

Claire pressed the back of her hand against Emma’s forehead, her eyes widening in sheer panic. "Vincent, her fever is spiking again—she's going into febrile convulsions! We need a hospital, not a safehouse!"
Before Vincent could answer, the beam of a high-powered searchlight suddenly cut through the heavy rain from the edge of the tree line, illuminating the culvert where they hid.
