Chapter 1 - The Abandoned Bedside
The master bedroom of the Moretti estate was bathed in bright video colors, illuminating the lavish decor that felt suffocatingly empty. Claire Moretti, thirty-four, sat upright in the rumpled, king-sized bed. Her fair, rosy skin was marked by streaks of tears, and her long brunette hair fell loose around her shoulders. She wore a soft white lace nightgown, her tearful brown eyes fixed coldly on the doorway. Clutched tightly against her chest was six-year-old Emma, her beloved daughter. Emma’s small, delicate frame radiated heat from a 102-degree fever, her flushed cheeks contrasting with her tired blue eyes. Wearing pale floral pajamas, a small white medical bandage covered her forehead, and she clutched a worn beige stuffed rabbit against her chest like a fragile shield.
The heavy oak door creaked open. Vincent Moretti, forty, Chicago’s most feared mafia boss, stood in the threshold. Tall, heavily muscular, and striking with thick dark wavy hair, trimmed stubble, and piercing blue-gray eyes, he wore his signature fitted black open-collar shirt, black trousers, luxury watch, and polished black shoes. Intricate black tattoos covered his neck, upper chest, forearms, and hands. His initial expression of irritation shifted instantly to confusion as he saw them.
Claire did not flinch. With a tear-streaked face, exhausted eyes fixed coldly on Vincent, and one arm wrapped tightly around Emma while the other protected her bandaged forehead, her quiet, wounded voice cut through the silence.
"Go back to Sophia."
Vincent stepped inside, driven by a sudden instinct, and reached toward Emma. Claire immediately pulled their daughter closer, a fierce, protective barrier. Vincent’s gaze dropped. He noticed the white hospital identification bracelet wrapped around Emma’s tiny wrist, the cluster of prescription medicine bottles and a glass of water on the nightstand, and the profound exhaustion etched across Claire’s face.
Emma stirred weakly against her mother’s chest. She opened her heavy eyes, looking toward Vincent without smiling—a silent heartbreak for a six-year-old whose father had been missing all night. Vincent dropped to his knees beside the bed, finally realizing the severity of his daughter’s illness, while Claire watched him with a growing, burning anger.
Vincent’s face was visibly shaken, his eyes moving rapidly from Emma’s hospital bracelet to Claire. One tattooed hand gripped the edge of the mattress as his deep voice dropped low, carrying a defensive edge.
"I didn’t know it was that serious."
Before Claire could answer, Vincent’s luxury phone abruptly buzzed and rang in his pocket. He pulled it out, recognized the glowing caller ID of Sophia Reynolds—his glamorous thirty-five-year-old first love whose late-night calls had steadily eroded his marriage—and froze. Claire saw his hesitation instantly. Emma curled tighter against her mother, closing her eyes again in silent rejection.
With slow, deliberate movements, Claire removed her diamond wedding ring, sliding it off her finger and placing it gently beside the medicine bottles on the nightstand. Then, she reached down and pulled a fully packed canvas overnight bag from beside the bed. Vincent’s face drained of color as he realized she had already made an irrevocable decision.
Claire’s expression turned suddenly calm. Her eyes locked directly onto Vincent, her fingers resting beside the abandoned ring, her voice steady and final.
"Your daughter spent half the night asking for you while you were with her."
Vincent reached out toward the packed bag, then instinctively toward Emma, but Claire raised one hand, stopping him before his fingers could touch either. He remained kneeling beside the mattress, completely stunned, while Claire shifted Emma securely into her arms and prepared to stand.
Claire’s face was cold and determined, her protective eyes never leaving Vincent as she held Emma tightly against her chest, her voice soft but absolute.

"By sunrise, Emma and I will be gone."
Before Vincent could utter a single word to stop them, the penthouse’s master security monitors on the wall flashed violently red as the private elevator chimed, indicating an unauthorized override code had just been entered from the ground floor.
