Chapter 5 - The Surveillance Reveal
The small elevator car descended smoothly into the subterranean levels of the estate, but the atmosphere inside was suffocating. The overhead monitor continued to broadcast the live security feed from the front gates, casting a pale, clinical blue light over the faces of Vincent, Claire, the bodyguards, and little Emma, who lay resting weakly against Vincent’s shoulder.
On the screen, the smoke cleared to reveal Sophia Reynolds. She stood tall in an expensive designer coat, her blonde hair styled to perfection, completely unblemished by the explosions that had just rocked the property. She wasn't running from mercenaries; she was standing beside them, calmly adjusting her diamond bracelet as she handed a heavy black master-key card to the lead operative.
Claire stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat. The betrayal wasn't just professional—it was deeply, sickeningly personal.
"Your precious Sophia," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock and venom. She turned her tear-streaked brown eyes toward Vincent. "She didn't walk into a trap, did she? She set it."
Vincent did not speak. His face hardened into a mask of pure, lethal ice. The blue-gray in his eyes turned nearly black, and the intricate black tattoos across his neck seemed to tighten as his massive frame went completely rigid. Every defense he had built up over the years to excuse Sophia’s demands, every late-night call he had answered, every time he had neglected Emma’s bedside—it had all been fed directly into the hands of the Syndicate.
"Boss?" Garrett asked cautiously, keeping his assault rifle raised as the elevator approached the sub-basement level. "What are your orders?"
Vincent gently shifted Emma into Claire’s arms, ensuring the sick child was held safely against her mother’s chest before he reached down and racked the slide of his tactical pistol with a sharp, echoing metal snap.
"Burn it all," Vincent said softly, his voice carrying the weight of a death sentence. "Activate the subterranean self-destruct protocol on the main estate. Nobody leaves this mountain alive."
Claire gasped, clutching Emma tighter. "Vincent, no! The entire estate—we're still underneath it!"
"The drainage tunnels lead a mile past the perimeter wall," Vincent replied without looking back, his tone absolute. "It’s the only way to get you and Emma out safely while I settle a debt."
The elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing the damp, stone-lined entrance of the subterranean drainage tunnels beneath the wine cellar. Cool, damp air rushed into the car, carrying the scent of moss and running water.

Garrett and the other two bodyguards moved out first, sweeping the dark corridor with their tactical flashlights. Vincent stepped out behind them, turning back one last time to look at Claire and his sick daughter standing in the threshold.
Before Claire could say another word, a deafening roar echoed from above as the main wine cellar ceiling began to buckle under the weight of an approaching explosive charge, plunging the sub-basement into sudden, chaotic darkness.
