Chapter 7 - The Searchlight in the Woods
The harsh, blinding beam of the high-powered searchlight swept across the rain-slicked trees, locking directly onto the concrete culvert where Vincent, Claire, and sick little Emma were sheltered. The heavy rumble of diesel engines shook the mud beneath their boots as two reinforced tactical vehicles idling at the edge of the clearing cut their headlights through the fog.
"They found us," Garrett muttered, raising his assault rifle and taking position near the mouth of the culvert. "Boss, we're boxed in. The drainage outlet is the only way forward, but it's narrow."
In Claire’s arms, little Emma began to shudder violently, her limbs locking up as the dangerous febrile seizure took hold. Her blue eyes rolled back slightly, and a soft, terrifying gasp escaped her pale lips.
"Vincent! Do something! She's stopping breathing!" Claire screamed, tears streaming down her face, mixing with the cold rainwater as she desperately tried to massage Emma’s stiff limbs.
Vincent didn't hesitate. He dropped to his knees in the mud, ignoring the danger outside. Placing his large, heavily tattooed hands gently on either side of Emma’s burning face, he spoke in a low, steady, commanding voice that seemed to cut straight through the chaos.
"Emma. Look at Daddy. Open your eyes for me, sweetheart," Vincent whispered, his deep voice cracking with a raw, unfiltered vulnerability that Claire had never heard in the seven years of their marriage.
Hearing her father's voice, the little girl’s eyelids fluttered. She let out a weak whimper, focusing her tired blue eyes on his face, her tiny fingers finally relaxing their grip on her scruffy stuffed rabbit to brush against his tattooed wrist.
Outside the culvert, a synthetic, distorted voice boomed through a megaphone from one of the approaching tactical vehicles.
"Moretti! It's over! Step out into the light with your hands empty, and the child gets medical attention. Refuse, and we burn this entire drainage system out!"
Claire looked up, her brown eyes flashing with absolute fury. She looked at Vincent, waiting to see if he would hesitate—waiting to see if some residual loyalty to Sophia or the Syndicate would make him blink.
Instead, Vincent stood up slowly to his full height. He didn't raise his hands. Instead, he pulled two heavy-caliber automatic pistols from his waist holsters, checking the slides with two crisp, synchronized clicks.
"Protect Claire and Emma," Vincent ordered Garrett without turning around.

Before the guards could protest, Vincent stepped out of the concrete culvert directly into the blinding glare of the searchlight, exposing himself completely in the open rain.
The mercenaries inside the vehicles opened fire immediately, sending a hail of bullets tearing through the trees and kicking up mud around Vincent’s polished black shoes. But Vincent didn't flinch. Raising both pistols with dead-eye precision, he returned fire with cold, terrifying efficiency, his first two shots shattering the spotlight housing and plunging the clearing into sudden, chaotic darkness.
