Chapter 8 - THE SECRET LOAN

Daniel asked to speak to me privately.

We stepped outside the restaurant while the others remained at the table.

He looked older than his forty-four years.

“About eighteen months ago, I took out a personal loan to cover our expenses,” he admitted. “Then I borrowed again to pay the first one.”

“How much?”

He told me.

The total was substantial enough to threaten their financial stability, but it wasn't the only problem.

Some of the money had gone toward household expenses. Some had covered Ashley's purchases. Some had been spent trying to maintain the lifestyle they believed they needed.

“And the new house?” I asked.

“We thought it would solve everything.”

“How?”

“Selling our current home eventually would help. Your house would give us the rest.”

I stared at him.

“You built an entire plan around money I never promised you.”

“I know.”

“Why didn't you tell me the truth?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

His answer softened me for a moment.

I could understand shame. I could understand fear.

But I could not accept deception as the price of loving my child.

“Daniel, you may have made mistakes. You may even have to lose the house you wanted. But you cannot fix your finances by taking away my independence.”

He nodded, tears gathering in his eyes.

Then he confessed that Ashley had been contacting the real estate agent for weeks.

She had also been researching properties suitable for older residents.

“Did she ever ask you to sign anything?” I asked.

“No.”

“Did you sign anything in my name?”

His head snapped up.

“Of course not.”

I studied his face, searching for any indication that he was hiding something more serious.

He seemed sincere, but I had learned that sincerity did not replace evidence.

“Tomorrow,” I said, “you and I are going to speak with my lawyer. You will tell her exactly what happened.”

He looked frightened.

“What if Ashley finds out?”

“She is already involved. And we cannot protect anyone by hiding the truth.”

As I walked toward my car, I realized that my anger had changed.

I no longer wanted to punish my son.

I wanted to stop the damage before it became irreversible.

But I also knew that love without boundaries had brought us to this point.

I would not make that mistake again.
