Chapter 11 - THE LENDER'S PHONE CALL

Susan called me on Thursday morning.
“Margaret, I want you to hear this directly from me. The lender has requested clarification about the expected funds for Daniel and Ashley's purchase.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did they say?”
“They were told that a family property sale would provide part of the financing. We are making it clear that you have not agreed to sell your house or contribute any money.”
“Can someone force me to do it?”
“Based on the documents we have reviewed, there is no basis for treating your home as available simply because your son expected you to help. We will address any improper representations through the appropriate channels.”
I thanked her.
Then she added, “I also recommend that you obtain your own credit report. It is a sensible precaution in these circumstances.”
I did.
Nothing suggested that a loan had been taken out in my name.
I felt an enormous sense of relief.
But Daniel and Ashley's financial situation was deteriorating.
The seller wanted confirmation that the purchase could proceed. The lender needed accurate information. The money they had committed was at risk, depending on the contract's terms.
For the first time, the consequences of their decisions were becoming impossible to ignore.
Daniel visited me that evening.
“Ashley says you could still help us if you wanted to.”
“I could. But I won't.”
He lowered his head.
“Are you going to let us lose the deposit?”
“Daniel, I did not tell you to make an offer. I did not tell you to borrow money. I did not tell you to tell the seller that my house would be sold.”
He looked away.
“I know.”
“Then stop asking me to solve the problem by surrendering my future.”
He left quietly.
That night, I sat beside the window and watched the wind move through Robert's apple tree.
I wished my son had made different choices.
I wished Ashley had asked instead of assuming.

But I knew that rescuing them now would only teach them that my boundaries disappeared whenever they became inconvenient.
For the first time in my life, I allowed my love for Daniel to coexist with a firm refusal.
