Chapter 12 - ASHLEY'S BREAKING POINT

Ashley arrived on Saturday morning without calling.

She stood on my porch in an expensive coat, her face pale with anger.

“You've turned everyone against us.”

I opened the door but did not invite her inside.

“I have corrected false assumptions about my property.”

“You've embarrassed Daniel in front of the lender.”

“He embarrassed himself by claiming funds he didn't have.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Do you know what it feels like to watch your children grow up in a house that's too small? To feel like everyone else is moving forward while you're trapped?”

For the first time, I heard the fear beneath her anger.

I understood that she wanted a better life for her children.

But wanting something did not make every method acceptable.

“You could have spoken honestly with me,” I said. “You could have asked whether I wanted to help. Instead, you decided that my home was the solution.”

“We thought you would eventually agree.”

“That is exactly the problem.”

She looked toward the garden.

“Daniel is devastated.”

“So am I.”

She seemed surprised by my answer.

“I never wanted to hurt you,” she whispered.

“Then why did you tell me I had already lived my life?”

She looked down.

For a moment, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she said, “You don't understand how much pressure we're under.”

“Then explain it honestly. Don't make it my responsibility to guess.”

Her face tightened.

“You could still save us.”

I shook my head.

“I can love you. I can love my grandchildren. I can help you find a financial counselor. But I will not sell my home to pay for a house you cannot afford.”

Ashley turned away.

Before leaving, she said something that chilled me.

“If we lose this house, I don't know what Daniel will do.”

I watched her walk to her car.

That afternoon, I called Daniel and told him exactly what she had said.

He sounded exhausted.

“Mom, I'm trying to fix everything.”

“Then begin by telling the truth to everyone involved.”

For the first time, he didn't defend his wife or ask me to compromise.

He simply said, “I will.”
