Chapter 7 - THE DEBT BEHIND THE DREAM HOUSE

Ashley finally admitted that the purchase offer had been accepted, subject to financing.

“How much have you already committed?” I asked.

Daniel swallowed.

“Thirty thousand dollars.”

“From where?”

“Our savings. A loan. Some help from Ashley's parents.”

George nodded reluctantly.

“We wanted to help them secure the property before another buyer came along.”

“Did you know they couldn't complete the purchase without selling my house?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“We believed you would help your son.”

I turned to Daniel.

“Did you tell the seller that I had agreed to sell?”

His face went pale.

“I told the agent we expected to have the funds available.”

“From my property?”

He nodded.

I felt something inside me go still.

My son hadn't merely hoped I would help.

He had allowed someone to believe my home was already part of his financial plan.

Ashley reached across the table.

“Daniel was trying to create a better future for the children.”

“By making promises with my house?”

“We thought you would understand.”

I looked at her steadily.

“No. You thought I would surrender because refusing would make me look selfish.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You would really let your grandchildren lose this opportunity?”

“My grandchildren already have a home. And their future should not depend on taking away mine.”

Daniel covered his face with both hands.

“Mom, we owe more money than you know.”

I leaned forward.

“How much?”

He hesitated before naming a figure that included credit-card balances, personal loans, and other obligations.

It was far worse than I had expected.

The dream house was not simply a reward for their hard work.

It was a desperate attempt to escape the consequences of years of financial decisions.

I stood.

“I will not sell my home. I will not contribute to your down payment. And I will not sign anything connected to this purchase.”

Ashley stared at me.

“If this falls apart, you will have destroyed our family.”

“No,” I replied. “I am refusing to rescue a plan I never approved.”

I picked up my handbag.

As I turned to leave, Daniel whispered something that stopped me.

“Mom, there's another loan. One I haven't told Ashley's parents about.”

I turned back.

“What loan?”

May you like

He looked at Ashley.

And for the first time that morning, she looked genuinely afraid.
