Chapter 16 - THE HOUSE THEY COULD ACTUALLY AFFORD

By summer, Daniel and Ashley had accepted that their dream house was beyond their reach.
They met with a financial counselor and began reviewing their spending.
Some changes were uncomfortable.
They postponed expensive purchases, reduced unnecessary subscriptions, and reconsidered the lifestyle they had been trying to maintain.
Daniel also took responsibility for speaking with the people involved in their failed purchase.
It was not an easy process, and there were still financial consequences to resolve.
But they stopped pretending that my house would somehow make everything disappear.
Several months later, Daniel told me they had found a more modest property within their budget.
It had three bedrooms, a small garden, and a kitchen that needed updating.
“It's not what Ashley imagined,” he admitted.
“Is it affordable?”
“Yes.”
“Can you make the payments without relying on anyone else's property?”
“Yes.”
“Then perhaps it's a better beginning.”
He smiled faintly.
Ashley was still disappointed, but she had begun to accept that a comfortable life was not the same as an impressive one.
I did not offer to pay their deposit.
They arranged their finances themselves and sought appropriate advice before proceeding.
When Daniel invited me to see the house, I noticed that the garden had enough space for a small vegetable patch.
“Ben could grow tomatoes here,” I said.
Daniel smiled.
“That's what we thought.”
For a moment, I saw the little boy who had once helped his father plant our apple tree.

I hoped he had finally learned that a family's future could be built through patience and honest work.
Not through promises made with someone else's money.
