Chapter 19 - THE HOUSEWARMING

The following spring, Daniel and Ashley invited me to a small housewarming party.
Their new home was not grand, but it was warm and welcoming.
The kitchen was freshly painted. Lucy had a bedroom of her own, and Ben proudly showed me the corner where he kept his books and toys.
Outside, Daniel had built a small wooden planter.
“I thought the children could grow tomatoes,” he said.
I smiled.
“Your father would have approved.”
Ashley approached me while the children played in the garden.
“I wanted to thank you for coming,” she said.
“I'm glad to be here.”
She looked toward Daniel.
“We've had to make some difficult changes. But I think we're learning to live within what we can afford.”
“That is a good thing to learn.”
She nodded.
Then she handed me a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Robert's apple tree, taken during the summer when the children had helped me plant flowers beneath it.
On the back, Ashley had written:
Thank you for teaching us that a home is more than its price.
I looked at her.
“Did you write this?”
“Yes.”
I folded the note carefully.
“Thank you.”
It wasn't a dramatic reconciliation. There were no speeches, no sudden declarations that everything was perfect.
But there was honesty.
Daniel was no longer asking me to rescue him. Ashley was no longer discussing my property as if it were hers to manage.
And the children were laughing in a garden their parents could afford.
As I left that evening, Daniel hugged me.
“I'm proud of you, Mom,” he said.
I raised an eyebrow.
“I'm not the one who bought a house I couldn't afford.”
He laughed.
“I know. That's why I'm proud of you.”
May you like
For the first time in a long while, we both laughed without bitterness.
It felt like a beginning.
