Chapter 5 - The Proclamation of Ghost Mesa

Isabel did not weep. The anger inside her was too vast, a white-hot furnace that vaporized grief before it could form tears. She carried the microfilm to the brass enlarger, her movements mechanical, precise, and devoid of tremor.
She lit the burner. She threaded the fragile, transparent strip through the optical glass lenses, aligning the frame against a flat sheet of whitewashed pine mounted on the wall.
The burner flared to life. The optical mirror focused the inverted beam of light.
Text appeared on the wall, blown up thirty times its original size.
It was Elena’s handwriting—the elegant, slanting calligraphy that Isabel had practiced imitating as a child when writing schoolroom essays. But the words were not a mother’s lullaby. They were an operational manifesto.
*PROJECT DAWN-BRED: PROTOCOL OMEGA*
*Recorded this 14th day of August, 1888.*
*Subject: Isabel (Control Alpha).*
*Secondary Vector: Naira (Host Beta).*
Isabel gripped the edge of the table so hard her knuckles turned chalk-white. "Host Beta..." she read under her breath.
She scanned down the projected document:
*If this capsule is being retrieved, the facilities at Mercy Crossing have been compromised or destroyed by Samuel’s inevitable paranoia. Samuel believes he directs the research; he does not understand that his own cognitive degradation is the direct result of Stage 4 atmospheric contamination.*
*To my daughter, Isabel:*
*If you are reading this, you have performed the extraction on Naira. You must understand what you have unleashed. The scar behind her hair was not a surgical closure; it was an implantation site for the trigger culture. The pathogen Halden cultivated cannot die. It remains dormant in the soil, in the water table of the territory, waiting for the ambient temperature to drop below freezing.*
*Halden is not dead.*
*The fire you set in the laboratory was precisely what he needed to fake his execution before the Senate Inquiry Committee. He escaped north toward the railhead at Prescott with six pressurized canisters of the live culture.*
*There is only one weapon that can neutralize an aerosolized deployment of the Mercer strain. It does not exist in a bottle. It exists in the cellular synthesis of your marrow, activated by the catalyst contained in this film’s emulsion.*
*Isabel, my brave girl: I did not choose Takoda because I hated him. I chose him because his people carry the ancient pre-Columbian genetic sequence that resists cellular necrosis. I made you a chimera. A weapon against the monsters who believe they own the world.*
*Do not trust Takoda if he tells you to flee.*
*He will try to save you by hiding you in the mountains.*
*You cannot hide.*
*Because within forty-eight hours of Naira’s capsule being unsealed, the tracking beacon inside the titanium cap will guide Halden’s hunters straight to your door.*
Isabel froze.
She slowly turned her head toward the tabletop where the titanium cap lay beside the washbasin.

Beneath the clear amber resin, a microscopic phosphorescent filament was glowing with a faint, rhythmic, rhythmic pulse of pale green light.
