Chapter 18 - The Bleeding Sun

Daybreak was breaking over Ghost Mesa, but it was not the golden sunrise Isabel had known her entire life.
The sky was the bruised, unnatural purple of a rotting plum. The wind howling across the jagged sandstone ridges didn't carry dust—it carried a shimmering, iridescent powder that sparkled in the faint dawn light like pulverized diamonds.
Isabel lay on her back, coughing violently, her lungs burning with residual sulfur. Beside her, Naira lay motionless, wrapped in the charred coat.
When Isabel looked down at the earth around them, her heart seized.
The soil was moving.
Not shifting with the wind, but crawling. Tiny, crystalline silver threads were weaving through the red sand, spreading out from the ventilation shafts of the underground bunker like the root system of a monstrous tree. Wherever the threads touched the sagebrush, the desert plants calcified instantly, turning into brittle, silver glass.
"No..." Isabel whispered, crawling over to Naira.
She peeled back the child’s tangled hair.
The wound was glowing. The silver threads had stopped weeping, but beneath the translucent skin of Naira’s scalp, a rhythmic, geometric pulse was visible. Thump. Thump. Thump.
It wasn't beating in time with Naira's heart.
It was beating in time with the earth beneath their knees. Every time the child’s scar pulsed, the silver web in the sand surged outward by another yard.

"Isabel..."
A voice croaked from the dust thirty yards behind them.
