Chapter 29 - The Second Resonance

"Back away from her," Isabel snarled, her finger tightening on the trigger. "I put three rounds through your heart during the breach at Ghost Mesa. I watched you bleed out on the linoleum."

Vance tilted his chrome-plated head, the internal gears whirring softly. "You destroyed a meat-shell, Sergeant. A temporary vessel. The network cannot be killed by severing a single node. You should know that by now. Look at your own arm."

Isabel didn't look down. She didn't need to. The silver threads had reached her jawline, crawling across her cheek, weaving themselves behind her teeth. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass.

"Why her?" Isabel demanded, stepping between Vance and the trembling child on the tram. "Why an eight-year-old girl? What did you do to her in that lab?"

"We did nothing to her," Vance said, taking a measured step forward. His carbon-fiber boots clicked against the iron grating. "She was discovered in the deep stratum beneath the Antarctic ice pack seven years ago, perfectly preserved inside a crystalline seed that fell from the stars fifty thousand years before the first human picked up a flint knife. We didn't build Naira, Isabel. We simply thawed her out. And then we realized... she was waiting for a host."

Vance pointed a long, metal-tipped finger directly at Isabel's chest.

"We couldn't interface with her core," Vance continued, his synthetic tone tinged with something resembling religious reverence. "Every scientist who touched her suffered catastrophic cerebral hemorrhaging. Their nervous systems burned out like cheap fuses. We needed a bridge. Someone with the rare genetic marker to tolerate the silver contagion without dying."

Isabel’s breath hitched. "Me."

"You," Vance confirmed. "Eight months ago, your assignment to her containment unit was not a security detail, Sergeant. It was an infection vector. We needed you to love her. We needed you to bleed for her. We needed your biological stress levels to push the symbiosis to critical threshold."

"You used me," Isabel choked out, a raw, burning fury rising through the mechanical coldness in her veins.

"We used your humanity to build a bridge between our dying species and what comes next," Vance said calmly. "And now, the bridge is complete. Naira called the fleet. But you... you are the key that unlocks the Cradle."

High above them, the colossal geometric sphere began to rotate. The chasm of plasma beneath the platform flared, sending waves of heat that singed the hair on Isabel's arms.

Inside the gestation capsules suspended across the ceiling, thousands of pairs of eyes opened simultaneously.
