Chapter 24 - Voices Through the Marrow

The maintenance tunnel smelled of ancient ozone, damp stone, and decaying copper wiring.
Isabel collapsed inside the rusted blast doors, dragging Naira into the pitch darkness. The heavy iron door had rusted three inches above the sill; with a desperate, animal snarl, Isabel wedged a discarded steel rebar beneath the plate and heaved until the door slammed down into the dirt with a hollow, concussive thud.
The blinding pillar of light was finally cut off by hundreds of feet of mountain rock above them. Inside the tunnel, the only illumination came from the terrifying silver glow emanating from Naira’s open wound and the faint, pulsing web beneath Isabel’s own flesh.
Isabel collapsed against the curved wall, sliding down into the damp dirt. She gripped her right arm, sobbing quietly into the shadows. The silver filaments had crossed her shoulder now, creeping into her clavicle, branching upward along her jugular vein. She could feel them vibrating against the back of her jaw. Every heartbeat brought a taste of copper and burning ozone to her tongue.
Beside her, Naira slumped sideways like a puppet whose strings had been abruptly severed.
The blinding light from the crystalline core dimmed to a soft, pulsing pearl. The child let out a long, shuddering gasp. Her obsidian eyes suddenly clouded, then contracted, shifting back to the terrified, tearful hazel Isabel had guarded through hell.
"Mama...?" Naira whispered, her small voice cracking. "Mama, it’s... it’s so loud. Tell them to stop screaming."
Isabel choked back her own terror and reached out, pulling the trembling girl into her lap, careful not to touch the glowing, exposed blossom of bone at the back of her head.
"I’m here, baby. I’m here," Isabel whispered, pressing her lips to Naira’s sweat-soaked temple. "Who is screaming, Naira? Who do you hear?"
"All of them," Naira cried, clutching Isabel’s torn jacket with tiny, bruised fingers. "The ones under the ice. The ones in the glass tanks at Ghost Mesa. They’re awake, Isabel. They opened their eyes when I called them. And... and the Tall Men are coming to collect them."
Isabel’s blood ran colder than the mountain wind. "The Tall Men? Halden’s people?"
Naira shook her head frantically, burying her face into Isabel’s chest. "No. Halden was just a scavenger. The Tall Men are the ones who put the seeds in the earth before the fire fell. They think we’re ripe."
Suddenly, the silver threads beneath Isabel’s neck twitched. Her vision flashed white.
A high-definition audio-visual feed detonated inside her cerebral cortex. She saw the sky above the continent from orbit: twelve brilliant silver spires piercing the atmosphere, forming an interlocking geometric web that spanned across oceans and mountain ranges. And moving through the upper thermosphere, descending toward the coordinates of their ridge with silent, horrific velocity, were three needle-like silhouettes of blackened alloy, their wakes trailing trails of distorted gravity.
Isabel gasped, tearing herself back into consciousness, her lungs burning. The silver in her blood wasn't just an infection. It was a receiver. She was intercepting the network's military traffic.

"They're not coming from the valley," Isabel breathed in horror, staring at the reinforced ceiling of the tunnel. "They're coming from the sky."
