Chapter 30 - The Hive's Mercy

"Run, Naira!" Isabel screamed, and pulled the trigger.

The high-caliber round struck Vance directly in his chrome forehead, deflecting off the reinforced metal with a shower of golden sparks. The impact snapped his head back, but the general did not fall.

His chest cavity split open, releasing four prehensile tendrils of braided tungsten wire that whipped through the air like scythes.

Isabel dropped to the deck, rolling beneath the first strike, which sheared through the tram's steel railing like wet paper. She sprang up, the silver network in her brain calculating Vance's attack vector before his hydraulics had even fully pressurized.

She lunged forward, driving her combat knife into the exposed seam beneath his synthetic sternum, twisting the blade to short-circuit the primary power core.

Arcing electricity exploded across the blade, blowing Isabel backward onto the iron grating. Her hands were blackened, the skin scorched away to reveal the glowing silver mesh beneath her own fingers.

Vance staggered, his internal fluids hissing against the hot plasma air. "Futile, Sergeant," he rasped, his voice glitching into lower octaves. "The synchronization has reached ninety-eight percent. The earth belongs to the Architects now."

Behind her, a piercing shriek echoed from the tram.

Isabel twisted her head. Naira was suspended three feet in the air above the control deck, held aloft by an invisible vortex of electromagnetic force radiating from the colossal core above. The flowering scar at the back of her skull had fully opened now, peeling back like the petals of an iron lotus, revealing the blinding, multifaceted diamond at the center of her existence.

Streams of liquid silver were pouring from the ceiling, flowing through the air like rivers of light, converging directly into the child's chest.

"Isabel!" Naira wailed, her voice sounding like a little girl drowning in an ocean of static. "I can't hold them back! They're erasing me! I'm forgetting your face!"

The words struck Isabel deeper than any blade, deeper than the silver contagion consuming her flesh.

*She is forgetting my face.*

Isabel scrambled to her feet, ignoring the ruined, smoking flesh of her hands. The fire in her veins roared, answering the core’s call. She didn't fight the infection anymore; she stopped resisting the cold, mathematical frequency hammering inside her skull.

She let the silver flood her mind.

Her vision shifted into complete, uninhibited omniscience. She saw the network. She saw the lines of code connecting Vance to the core, connecting the core to the orbiting fleet, connecting the fleet to the thousands of sleepers waking in their glass coffins.

She saw the master switch.

"You wanted a bridge?" Isabel whispered, her voice doubling, harmonizing with the terrifying frequency of the hive.

She turned toward Vance. Her left eye blazed with blinding white light.

With a motion faster than the Reclaimer’s sensors could register, Isabel closed the distance, grabbed Vance’s metal skull with both hands, and forced her glowing, silver-threaded thumbs directly into his sapphire sensor sockets.

May you like

"Then take the whole current," Isabel roared.
