Chapter 4 - Why Adrian Installed the Red ButtonAdrian installed the emergency button six weeks before the marina meeting.

His wheelchair already contained a standard location beacon for mechanical failures and medical emergencies. A mobility engineer added a waterproof switch beneath the right armrest after Adrian reported several troubling incidents.

First, a ramp at home had been left dangerously steep.

Then one wheel brake failed after someone loosened its mounting screw. Vivian blamed household staff both times.

Adrian could not prove intent.

The upgraded system stored short rolling logs of wheel movement, brake changes, location, and nearby audio. Pressing the button transmitted the latest encrypted segment to his attorney and a professional monitoring service.

It did not record continuously or secretly archive his entire life.

It preserved only the minutes surrounding an emergency activation.

Vivian knew the wheelchair had tracking features but assumed they were disabled underwater.

She noticed the visible brake.

She never noticed the small red switch beneath the armrest—or asked why Adrian had recently begun checking it before leaving home.
