Chapter 10 - The Button That Was Never Pressed AgainFive years later, Adrian returned to the marina for the opening of a fully accessible public dock.

Guardrails protected the steepest sections. Emergency ladders, call stations, and level boarding platforms lined the slips.

The changes were not named after him.

He had refused to turn the night Vivian pushed him into the water into a permanent attraction.

After the ceremony, Adrian rolled alone toward Slip Forty-Two and stopped well before the edge.

Warm harbor lights trembled across the dark surface.

Beneath his right armrest, the red button remained within reach. He checked it before every long trip, though he had never needed to press it again.

For years, he remembered the water as the place where Vivian nearly erased his voice.

Now he remembered something else: his hand searching through darkness, finding the switch, and sending one clear signal that he was still there.

Adrian locked both wheel brakes.

Then he turned away from the water and followed the illuminated dock toward the people waiting for him.
