Chapter 8 - A Deadly Game of Chess

Monday morning brought a new level of tension.
When Maya boarded the bus, the boyfriend stood on the porch, watching Arthur.
He didn't just glare this time; he stared with a menacing smirk.
He raised his hand and pointed two fingers at Arthur like a gun.
He pretended to pull the trigger.
Arthur’s blood ran cold, but he maintained a blank expression.
He closed the doors and drove away, his heart hammering.
The monster knew Arthur was paying attention.
This was no longer just a suspicion; it was a deadly game of chess.
Arthur checked the hidden notebook after the morning route.
Maya had written a new message.
"He knows you look at me. He told me to stay away from the old man."
Arthur wrote a quick reply.
"I am going to get you out. Be brave. Keep the pills hidden."

He placed the notebook back in the vent, praying for her safety.
